Over 150 Brave Young Immigrants Begin IDF Journey Through Garin Tzabar Scouts Program
Edited by: Fern Sidman
Over 150 young immigrants from the United States, Canada, England, and other countries have arrived in Israel as part of the Garin Tzabar Scouts program. According to a press release on Thursday, these individuals will begin a four-month absorption process before enlisting in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), marking a significant commitment to the state of Israel. The Jerusalem Post reported that their arrival comes at a time when the nation is deeply engaged in the ongoing conflict with Hamas.
Daniel Amira, CEO of Tzofim Tzabar Olami, praised the new immigrants for their bravery and dedication. “In a difficult time when we are desperate for the arrival of new immigrants, the Tzofim Garin Tzabar enterprise succeeds in bringing to Israel individual immigrants who left behind their home, parents, work, and studies, and chose to be here with us in the midst of the war and contribute to the country,” Amira stated. The Jerusalem Post report noted that Amira hailed their decision as “a true fulfillment of Zionism.”
These young individuals, known as lone soldiers, are making a significant personal sacrifice by leaving behind their lives abroad to join the IDF, embodying a deep commitment to Israel’s future.
The Garin Tzabar program, established in 1991 by the Scouts movement, has been instrumental in supporting lone soldiers. Over the past 33 years, it has provided a comprehensive support system to more than 7,000 immigrant soldiers. As the report in The Jerusalem Post explained, this system includes guidance during the absorption period, preparation for military service, and assistance in building a community of peers.
The program is particularly significant given the unique challenges faced by lone soldiers, who often lack immediate family support in Israel. By fostering a sense of belonging and camaraderie, Garin Tzabar ensures that these young immigrants are well-prepared for both military service and life in Israel.
The arrival of this group follows another wave of immigration reported by The Jerusalem Post in August 2024, when over 300 young individuals joined the Summer 2024 Garin Tzabar program. This steady influx of new immigrants during the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict speaks volumes about the resilience of the program and the dedication of these young people to contribute to the nation’s security and growth.
As The Jerusalem Post report indicated, their commitment to serve in the IDF during a period of heightened tension and uncertainty is a powerful testament to their courage and sense of duty.
The Winter 2025 cohort will officially begin their journey on January 12 with an opening event at the Tzofim Garin Tzabar Village in the Ra’anana Absorption Center. This event will mark the start of their four-month absorption process, during which they will acclimate to Israeli society and prepare for military service.
The Jerusalem Post report emphasized that programs such as Garin Tzabar play a crucial role in integrating new immigrants into Israeli society, providing them with the tools and support necessary to succeed both in the military and as citizens of Israel.
The Garin Tzabar program’s ability to attract and support young immigrants during such challenging times highlights the enduring appeal of Zionist ideals. As the report in The Jerusalem Post pointed out, the program’s success is a reflection of the strength and unity of Israel’s global community, which continues to rally in support of the nation’s future.
By fostering a sense of purpose and providing a robust support system, Garin Tzabar ensures that these young individuals can thrive as they take on the dual challenges of immigration and military service. Their contributions will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on Israel’s society and security.
