Six Injured in Bronx Shooting, Including Mother and Daughter Used as Shields
Six people were injured in a shooting Monday evening on White Plains Road in the Williamsbridge section of the Bronx, including a 40-year-old mother and her 12-year-old daughter who were reportedly used as shields during the attack, according to the NYPD. As The Gothamist reported, the shooting occurred just before 5 p.m. when two gunmen targeted a group gathered outside a convenience store at 3544 White Plains Rd.
Police said that as the group fled inside the store, one of the intended targets grabbed the mother and used her as a human shield. NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell called the incident “a brazen and heartless attack on innocent New Yorkers,” adding that “cowardly intended victims used a mother as a shield,” according to The Gothamist.
The mother was shot in the stomach, and her daughter was hit in the leg, Chell explained. Four young men, ages 18 to 21, also suffered gunshot wounds to their arms and legs. As reported by The Gothamist, all six victims were taken to a local hospital and were listed in stable condition as of Tuesday morning.
Surveillance footage showed the suspects, described as two men wearing dark clothing—one in a black Nike sweatsuit and the other in a gray hoodie—firing at the group before fleeing, police said.
“This was a crowded store with Bronx community members shopping in that store, getting shot by these shooters,” Chell noted, according to The Gothamist.
Detectives are actively investigating the shooting and working to identify the intended targets, the NYPD said. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
