(TJV) Police in Madison, Wisconsin, are responding to a shooting incident at a local Christian school on Monday. Authorities have reported multiple injuries.
Officers were called to the Abundant Life Christian School at approximately 10:57 a.m. local time following reports of an active shooter. Upon arrival, they discovered a “juvenile” deceased at the scene, believed to be responsible for the attack. Officials are urging residents to steer clear of the area.
Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes confirmed that at least four individuals, excluding the shooter, have died, while five others have been transported to a nearby hospital with injuries. Barnes did not specify whether the victims were students or staff members.
“This is a situation you train for but hope you never have to face,” a police spokesperson said during a press briefing. “Today is a truly tragic day.”
Emergency response vehicles have gathered outside the Abundant Life Christian School, where the incident occurred. According to Barnes, the victims’ injuries range from minor to life-threatening.
Police highlighted that they conduct active shooter training almost every quarter, with the most recent session taking place about two weeks ago.
In an official statement, the Madison Police Department announced, “We are investigating a shooting at Abundant Life Christian School. Multiple injuries have been reported. This is an active and ongoing investigation, and further details will be shared as they become available. We ask the public to avoid the area.”
All students have been safely evacuated from the school, and officers have completed multiple sweeps of the building. A third inspection is underway with bomb-sniffing dogs as a precaution, according to Chief Barnes.
