Message to the IDF: Time to Clear Out Jenin

Jenin, a city that once symbolized agricultural prosperity in the northern Shomron region of Israel has become a hotbed of terrorist activity, entrenched with armed factions loyal to Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ). Both groups, heavily funded and ideologically supported by Iran, operate with near impunity in this urban labyrinth, turning it into a de facto stronghold for Tehran’s regional ambitions. Israel’s hesitance to launch sustained military campaigns in Jenin has allowed these terror groups to metastasize, embedding themselves deep into Palestinian society. It is time for Israel to take decisive action: targeted military raids must be carried out with precision, resolve, and a clear objective—to dismantle the infrastructure of Iranian-backed terrorism in Jenin.

Jenin has become more than just a local hub for Palestinian terrorist activity; it is now an outpost for Iran’s “axis of resistance.” Iran’s strategy is crystal clear: destabilize Israel through proxy militias on its borders while avoiding direct military confrontation. For Iran, Hamas and PIJ in Jenin serve as pawns in a much larger geopolitical chess game, one where Palestinian civilians are often sacrificed for Tehran’s broader goals.

The streets of Jenin tell a stark story. Posters of slain terrorists adorn walls, portraying them as martyrs in a glorified resistance narrative. Young men, equipped with walkie-talkies and assault rifles, patrol the narrow alleyways with a sense of authority that undermines both the Palestinian Authority (PA) and Israel’s security forces. The absence of governance in these areas has allowed these terror factions to establish command centers, manufacture weapons, and plan attacks on Israeli civilians and soldiers alike.

Both Hamas and Islamic Jihad are not isolated insurgent cells—they are part of a sophisticated, well-funded network. Iran supplies these groups with money, weapons, and training, ensuring they remain militarily capable and ideologically committed. The recent surge in attacks emanating from Jenin illustrates the growing brazenness of these groups. Bomb-making factories, weapons caches, and intelligence centers have been uncovered in past Israeli raids, yet these hubs are swiftly rebuilt, often with Iranian funding and logistical support.

Furthermore, Jenin serves as a pipeline for extremism. Its terrorists export violence not only locally but across Judea and Samaria and even into Israel’s heartland. Without intervention, Jenin risks becoming a miniature Gaza—a heavily armed enclave where terrorism thrives under Iranian patronage.

The Palestinian Authority (PA), nominally responsible for maintaining order in Jenin, has proven incapable—or unwilling—to confront Hamas and Islamic Jihad. Years of internal weakness, corruption, and loss of legitimacy have eroded the PA’s ability to impose authority over these factions. The terrorists in Jenin have filled this vacuum, turning the city into an autonomous zone where Palestinian Authority forces dare not tread.

Some argue that empowering the PA is the solution. However, experience has shown that PA forces are both outgunned and outmaneuvered in Jenin. Israel cannot subcontract its security to an entity that lacks both the means and the will to address the terrorist infrastructure festering in its backyard.

Critics of military intervention in Jenin often raise concerns about collateral damage and the potential for escalating violence. These are valid concerns, but they cannot serve as an excuse for inaction. Israeli military operations in Jenin must be targeted, intelligence-driven, and accompanied by measures to minimize harm to civilians. However, the cost of inaction far outweighs the risks of intervention.

A sustained campaign, rather than sporadic raids, is essential. Piecemeal operations have failed to achieve lasting results. Israel must adopt a strategy that systematically dismantles Hamas and PIJ’s operational capacity in Jenin, disrupts their funding pipelines, and apprehends or eliminates key commanders.

Israel’s previous operations have shown that the IDF has the capability to carry out precise, surgical strikes. The recent campaign in July 2023, while effective in disrupting terrorist activity temporarily, fell short of achieving lasting stability due to its limited scope. A more robust, sustained strategy is required.

The stakes extend far beyond Jenin. Iran’s increasing foothold in the Judea and Samaria region of Israel is part of a broader strategy aimed at encircling Israel with proxy forces—from Hezbollah in Lebanon to Hamas in Gaza, and now PIJ and Hamas cells in Jenin. Tehran’s influence is not limited to financial aid; it also includes advanced weapons systems and training for urban warfare.

If Jenin is allowed to fester, it will not remain a localized problem. The terror infrastructure built there will expand, threatening neighboring Israeli towns and cities, and emboldening other terrorist factions across the region.

Israel has a right and a duty to protect its citizens. No nation would tolerate a terrorist enclave developing mere miles from its population centers. Moreover, decisive action in Jenin is not just a matter of national security; it is also a strategic necessity in the broader regional fight against Iranian expansionism.

It is essential to recognize that most Palestinians in Jenin are not combatants—they are civilians caught in the crossfire of a geopolitical struggle they did not choose. However, the presence of Hamas and PIJ among civilian populations is a deliberate tactic, one designed to deter military action and invite international condemnation. Israel must resist falling into this trap while doing everything possible to minimize civilian harm.

The situation in Jenin is a microcosm of a larger regional struggle. Allowing Hamas and Islamic Jihad to thrive under Iranian sponsorship in the Samaria region poses an existential threat to Israel’s security and undermines prospects for any meaningful political resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Targeted military operations, combined with clear political objectives and robust intelligence, are not only justified but necessary. Israel cannot afford to let Jenin become another Gaza—a fortress of terrorism shielded by the fog of political hesitation. The time for decisive action is now.
