Horrifying NYC Subway Attack: Man Shoved Onto Tracks on New Year’s Eve
A New York City subway rider is fighting for his life after being pushed onto the tracks at the 18th Street station and struck by an oncoming 1 train. The shocking incident, which occurred in broad daylight on New Year’s Eve, was captured on video. The disturbing footage shows the unprovoked attack that left the victim critically injured.
According to the New York Post, the incident happened shortly after 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Police said the victim, a 45-year-old man, was standing near the edge of the platform, reportedly looking at his phone, when a man in a hooded sweatshirt suddenly shoved him into the train’s path. The attack appears to have been random, and there is no indication that the victim and attacker knew each other.
Firefighters rushed to the scene and worked to free the injured man, who was trapped between subway cars. He was transported to a local hospital in critical but stable condition, police said.
Surveillance footage obtained by the New York Post shows the suspect loitering near the edge of the platform before making his move. In a chilling moment, the man is seen pushing the unsuspecting victim onto the tracks just as the southbound train entered the station. Seconds before the attack, two individuals were caught on camera jumping the turnstile. The same individuals fled the station after witnessing the horrifying scene.
Described as a man with a light complexion, he was wearing a black jacket over a dark hoodie, gray jeans, and a mask at the time of the attack, the suspect has been apprehended but little information at this time is available.
Police are urging anyone with information to come forward as they continue their investigation.
Some reports claim the suspect is in custody, this story will be updated.
The New York Post reports that the attack is the latest in a string of violent incidents on New York City’s transit system. Recent crimes include two subway slashings earlier in the week and the tragic December 22 torching death of a sleeping passenger on an F train in Brooklyn.
As news of the attack spread, subway riders expressed heightened concerns about their safety. Kips Bay resident Tom, who was outside the 18th Street station as police investigated, admitted to feeling more apprehensive about riding the subway. “I usually avoid traveling late at night, but to hear something like this happened during the day is terrifying,” he told the New York Post. “It’s shocking, but sadly, it feels like incidents like this are becoming more frequent.”
New York City authorities are emphasizing the importance of vigilance while traveling on public transit, particularly near the edges of platforms. The New York Post continues to follow this developing story and provide updates as the NYPD searches for the attacker.
