Harvey Weinstein, the former Hollywood producer and convicted sex offender, has been admitted to a New York City hospital for what his lawyer described as “emergency treatment” following an “alarming blood test.” The New York Post reports that Weinstein, 72, remains under medical supervision at Bellevue Hospital as doctors work to stabilize his condition.

Weinstein’s attorney, Imran Ansari, highlighted the dire state of his client’s health and conditions at Rikers Island, where Weinstein is awaiting a new trial on sex assault charges. “He is suffering from a lack of adequate medical care and enduring deplorable and inhumane conditions,” Ansari said in a statement shared by the NY Post. “The results of his blood test necessitated immediate medical attention.”

Weinstein’s health has been a subject of increasing concern. In recent years, he has faced a litany of serious medical issues, including emergency heart surgery, diabetes, spinal stenosis, and a cancer diagnosis. His legal team has repeatedly voiced concerns over the adequacy of his medical treatment while in custody. Just last week, they filed a $5 million legal claim against New York City, alleging medical negligence and inadequate care for Weinstein.

Juda Engelmayer, a spokesperson for Weinstein, underscored the severity of the situation, telling the NY Post, “Mr. Weinstein, who is suffering from a number of illnesses, including leukemia, has been deprived the medical attention that someone in his condition deserves, prisoner or not. In many ways, this mistreatment constitutes cruel and unusual punishment.”

Weinstein, once a towering figure in the entertainment industry, became the central figure in the #MeToo movement after allegations of sexual misconduct against him surfaced in 2017. More than 80 women accused him of various acts of sexual harassment and assault spanning decades, including high-profile actresses like Ashley Judd and Gwyneth Paltrow.

In 2020, Weinstein was convicted of first-degree criminal sexual act and third-degree rape in New York. He received a 23-year prison sentence, signaling a historic victory for the #MeToo movement. However, in April 2023, an appeals court overturned this conviction, citing procedural errors, and Weinstein now awaits retrial.

Meanwhile, Weinstein continues to serve time for separate sexual assault convictions in Los Angeles. In 2022, he was found guilty on three charges, including rape, and was sentenced to 16 years in prison. These convictions followed accusations from several women who testified against Weinstein, detailing harrowing accounts of assault and coercion.

In the latest allegations, Weinstein faces a first-degree criminal sex act charge for allegedly performing a forcible act of oral sex on a woman in a Manhattan hotel room in 2006. Weinstein has maintained his innocence, pleading not guilty to all charges.

Weinstein’s legal team argues that his failing health jeopardizes his ability to participate in his own defense. “His deprivation of care is not only medical malpractice but a violation of his constitutional rights,” Ansari told the NY Post. The $5 million legal claim is the first step toward a lawsuit against the city, aiming to address what his lawyers call systemic failures in providing adequate medical care for incarcerated individuals.

As Weinstein awaits his retrial and deals with ongoing legal challenges, his health remains precarious. His situation highlights broader debates about the treatment of incarcerated individuals with serious medical conditions and the ethical obligations of the justice system.

Weinstein’s dramatic fall from grace—from a Hollywood titan to a symbol of abuse and accountability—continues to unfold, with new legal battles and health crises.
