A bombshell new lawsuit is hitting former Mayor Bill de Blasio with explosive accusations of stripping New Yorkers of their “basic liberties” while playing favorites during the COVID-19 pandemic. Filed by a group of City Council members, the 168-page document lays bare the blatant hypocrisy of de Blasio’s administration, which allowed chaotic Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests to dominate New York streets for months, while small businesses, churches, and schools were ruthlessly shuttered.

This lawsuit, first reported by the NY Post, accuses de Blasio’s regime of imposing tyrannical mandates that crushed working-class citizens, particularly those who dared to question the effectiveness of the lockdowns and the vaccine. The filing questions why thousands of unvaccinated emergency responders were forced to work in the midst of the pandemic, with little to no protective measures, while protests that ignited the city in May and June 2020 were permitted to surge freely without consequence.

“New Yorkers were lied to about the efficacy of the lockdowns and the vaccines,” the lawsuit claims, exposing de Blasio’s catastrophic mismanagement during the health crisis. It underscores the damaging contradiction of de Blasio’s policies: businesses were shut down, lives were destroyed, but the mayor allowed the BLM riots—widely seen as super-spreader events—to persist unabated. It is a stark reminder of how those who participated in protests were granted a special exemption from the rules, while hardworking citizens were punished.

As the NY Post highlights, this isn’t the first time de Blasio’s administration has been caught in a web of contradictions. While New York City implemented draconian vaccine mandates, the scandalous hypocrisy of Dr. Jay Varma, the city’s former COVID czar, was laid bare. Varma, who championed the lockdown measures, was exposed this year admitting to engaging in illegal drug-fueled sex parties during the pandemic—blatantly flouting the very rules he imposed on others. It’s the kind of double standard that enraged New Yorkers, yet de Blasio never held his allies accountable.

The lawsuit goes on to detail how city workers who chose not to receive the vaccine were fired without due process, while politically-connected elites received preferential treatment. Dr. Varma, for instance, faced no significant consequence for his actions. Meanwhile, the case of NYPD officer Kimberly Lucas—who was caught submitting a fraudulent vaccine card—demonstrates how politically motivated de Blasio’s system was. Despite her illegal actions, Lucas only received a slap on the wrist, while thousands of other city workers were terminated for simply rejecting the mandate.

In the midst of all this chaos, de Blasio failed the children of New York City, with schools closed for months, leading to devastating declines in academic performance and mental health issues. As the NY Post aptly pointed out, the closure of schools had no scientific backing and instead appeared to be driven by the political clout of the teachers’ unions.

De Blasio’s reckless policies not only contributed to the deepening mental health crisis among students but also worsened the educational setbacks caused by forced homeschooling. The long-term effects are now visible in the plummeting test scores and deteriorating mental health of public school children across the city.

Attorney Jimmy Wagner, who filed the lawsuit, did not mince words: “What happened during the pandemic in New York City was executive tyrannical authority. This is not how our system is supposed to operate. De Blasio and his cronies outcasted anyone who dared question their mandates,” Wagner charged.

The filing comes at a crucial time as the city grapples with the aftermath of de Blasio’s disastrous leadership. This legal battle, however, is not seeking financial compensation but demanding accountability from the former administration for the suffering it caused. Wagner and his clients—six City Council members are seeking to force de Blasio to provide answers in writing about his pandemic-era decisions, to ensure no New Yorker faces such reckless governance again.

The petition was filed Dec. 10 by council members Joanna Ariola (R-Queens), Kristy Marmorato (R-Bronx), Inna Vernikov (R-Brooklyn), Vickie Paladino (R-Queens), David Carr (R-Staten Island) and Robert Holden (D-Queens).

A hearing for this high-stakes case is set for February 2025, and it could serve as the final blow to de Blasio’s tarnished legacy.

In response, a spokesperson for the city Law Department dismissed the lawsuit as “baseless,” but the mounting public backlash, fueled by the revelations in the NY Post, makes it clear that de Blasio’s reign will not be easily forgotten.

The fight for justice has only just begun.
