‘Alice’ Star Linda Lavin Dead At 87

Tony-winning Broadway actress Linda Lavin died Dec. 29 at the age of 87.

Lavin was born in Maine, the daughter of David Joseph Lavin, a businessman, and Lucille (née Potter), an opera singer.The Lavin family were active members of the local Jewish community. Both sets of grandparents, Simon and Jessie Lavin and Harry and Esther Potter, emigrated from Russia

 

The famous actress and star of the 1976 sitcom “Alice” was actively working during the month of her death. She promoted her new Netflix show “No Good Deed” and was in the process of filming the Hulu comedy series “Mid-Century Modern,” in which she played a leading role. Lavin’s public relations representative said the beloved actress passed suddenly due to complications from recently diagnosed lung cancer, according to Deadline.

Lavin was nominated for an Emmy award for her role in “Alice” and won a Tony award for her acting in the 1986 play “Broadway Bound.”

The famous actress was a former child stage star. She began her Broadway career in the 1960s in the musical “It’s a Bird…It’s a Plane…It’s Superman,” as well as the play “Last of the Red Hot Lovers,” which led to her first Tony Award nomination in 1970.

Lavin’s talents in theater and as a Hollywood actress made her a double threat in the industry. She clinched a recurring role on the ABC sitcom “Barney Miller” from 1975 to 1976 before she secured the leading role of a waitress at a roadside diner and widowed young mother in “Alice.” The series ran for nine seasons, and a total of 202 episodes.

The star continued to work steadily in television, landing major, series-regular roles in “Sean Saves the World,” “9JKL” and “B Positive.”

She starred alongside Nathan Lane, Matt Bomer and Nathan Lee Graham, in “Mid-Century Modern” and had filmed seven of the scheduled ten episodes before production ceased for the holidays. Production was scheduled to resume mid-January, and it’s currently not known how the show will continue without her.

Her final public appearance was on Dec. 4 for the red carpet premiere of “No Good Deed.”
