The incident unfolded when troopers from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) noticed a semi-truck with expired tags just across the U.S.-Mexico border, as was reported by The Post. The truck was a convincing replica of a Lowe’s transport vehicle, complete with branding and a driver wearing a Lowe’s T-shirt. However, the expired tags raised suspicion, prompting the officers to initiate a traffic stop.
The driver, identified as Megel Cazanna Patterson from Mississippi, appeared calm and cooperative, claiming he was merely the driver and had no knowledge of anything suspicious concerning the truck. When officers requested permission to search the vehicle, Patterson fatefully agreed, unaware that this consent would lead to the exposure of a sophisticated smuggling operation, as was indicated in The Post report.

As officers climbed into the semi-trailer, they noticed something unusual. The trailer, which seemed to be carrying only a few white doors, aroused suspicion. The migrants, both male and female, were drenched in sweat and suffering from severe dehydration and numbness in their legs due to the cramped conditions, The Post report revealed. The bodycam footage, later released, captured the harrowing moment as one by one, the migrants crawled out of the small hole, desperate for relief.
The migrants, who had been smuggled into the U.S. under dangerous conditions, required immediate medical attention. DPS spokesperson Lt. Chris Olivarez described the scene, noting that the individuals were suffering from dehydration and other symptoms related to their ordeal. Some of the migrants were in such poor condition that they needed urgent care. “Great work by our DPS Troopers in preventing a mass casualty smuggling event,” Olivarez stated, according to The Post report, acknowledging the potential for tragedy had the smuggling attempt not been intercepted.
The driver, Megel Cazanna Patterson, was arrested and charged with smuggling persons with the likelihood of serious bodily injury or death.
