(AP) Former Orange County prosecutor and well-known New York judge Stewart Rosenwasser died by suicide following a shootout with the FBI on Tuesday. Rosenwasser, a prominent figure in the legal community, had been under investigation for allegedly accepting bribes from Mout’z “Marty” Soudani, the victim in a $1.9 million embezzlement case he prosecuted. He was also facing a lawsuit from Soudani’s family, accusing him of accepting $48,000 in bribes.
Shortly after his death, an indictment was unsealed, charging both Rosenwasser and Soudani with bribery and related crimes. When FBI agents arrived at his home to arrest him, a standoff occurred, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
The indictment claimed Rosenwasser abused his position to enrich himself and manipulate the prosecution of the Soudani family. He also faced charges for making false statements to the FBI during their investigation. Rosenwasser, who had a lengthy and high-profile legal career, previously served as an Orange County judge.
