Resilience and Reflection: An Artistic Response to October 7th“ Commemorates Darkest Day for Jews Since Holocaust

David Benrimon Fine Art Gallery, 41 E 57th St 2nd floor, New York, NY 10022

New York, NY (August 28, 2024) — On October 7th, 2023, a series of tragic events unfolded, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of many, particularly within the Israeli community. To honor the first anniversary of these events, the upcoming exhibition, “Resilience and Reflection: An Artistic Response to October 7th,” will open to the public, exploring the complex tapestry of emotions and narratives that arose from that day. This exhibition features works from emerging and established Israeli artists, such as Dede Bandaid, Pilpeled, and Nirit Takele, offering a profound exploration of grief, resilience, and hope.

Art has long been a powerful tool for processing collective trauma and catalyzing communal healing. “Resilience and Reflection” aims not only to remember the lives and stories intertwined with October 7th but also to showcase the incredible capacity of human beings to seek hope and renewal in the face of despair. The exhibition’s collection spans various mediums, including painting, poems, sculpture, video, and mixed media, each serving as a personal response and reflection on the events of that day. Danielle R’Bibo is the curator of the exhibition, her first solo exhibit.

“Art allows us to communicate the inexpressible, to process pain, and to find hope amid sorrow,” said R’bibo. “The artists in this exhibition are deeply moved by the opportunity to share their work in America. Through their art, they aim to honor the memories of those lost, bringing a human face to the war. This exhibition is not about politics; it’s about the people—their stories, their pain, and their resilience.”

The audience is a crucial part of the healing process, and visitors to the exhibition will be invited to engage deeply with the artworks, each narrating a personal story of struggle, memory, and the relentless pursuit of peace. The exhibition seeks to provide a renewed sense of connection to these events, a deeper understanding of their impact, and an appreciation for the role of art in navigating shared human experiences, fostering a sense of empathy and connection among the audience.

This exhibition is Danielle’s first solo curated show.

How great is the hunger
Woe to the walls.

This piece is part of a new series responding to the attacks on Israel on October 7th, 2023. The series confronts the tragedy in an abstracted and fragmented approach, attempting to offer a form of self-healing and processing in order to overcome the collective trauma inflicted upon the Jewish diaspora and the Israeli civilians.

Days unending, where the code red alarm echoes ceaselessly. Days where safety is a distant memory, and the future, even the present, feels shrouded in uncertainty. Memories seared into our souls from the physical and emotional torment we and others endure, forever lingering in our thoughts and hearts. Scars, both seen and unseen, destined to remain, perhaps never to heal. The relentless conflict carves into us, leaving humanity cut and scarred.
The small house with the red roof stands as a testament to the horrors around Gaza on that fateful October 7th. The earth beneath the figure, crafted from olive wood, symbolizes peace with its olive branch. The entire composition—from the figure to the ground and the house—captures emotions too heavy for most to bear or speak of.
In silence, I create. I carve memories and experiences of that October from wood, teetering between hardship and hope—that change may come, and we might yet find healing and joy.
