Remembering Phil Donahue

Dear Editor:

Phil Donahue was an excedingly gracious interviewer—and a very kind man. His wife, Marlo Thomas, was just as kind. She and I were once in a CR group together long, long ago. Phil, (or Donahue as I knew him and as he was known), first flew me out to Dayton, Ohio in the mid-1970s to talk about my book, “Women, Money, and Power” and he had me back again, I believe when he was already in New York City, to discuss my book “Mothers on Trial. The Battle for Custody and Divorce.” I had some of “my” mothers in the audience and he called upon each and every one. Donahue helped present my radical feminist ideas to the nation. He was one of the few the television hosts who actually seemed to have read the books he featured—no small feat. His programs lasted for an hour, the audience participation was extensive. I will never forget his enormous compassion, erudition, and simple, human warmth. “Donahue”—please, please rest in peace. And Marlo: Please be comforted for your enormous loss.

Sincerely
Dr. Phyllis Chesler

No Surprise: PA Befriends Hamas

Dear Editor:

An August 14 Inquirer news article noted that “the U.S.-backed Palestinian Authority” recently signed a unity agreement with the Hamas terrorists. Hamas murdered and kidnapped American citizens in its invasion of Israel last October, and has been holding American hostages ever since then. Considering that the Biden Administration has given the Palestinian Arabs nearly $700-million in the past ten months, it’s deeply disturbing that the Palestinian Authority would befriend those who murder and kidnap Americans.

Sincerely,
Moshe Phillips

Schumer and Jeffries Silent on MTA Difficulties

Dear Editor:

Kudos to the hard working carrier civil servants at both the MTA and Federal Transit Administration, not “kudos to Schumer & Jeffries” (Dorothy Kastrouvksy–Letters to the Editor, August 14) when it comes to the MTA $800 million of funding to bringing the Classon Avenue G train subway station and others into compliance with the Americans for Disability Act including the installation of elevators.

Senator Schumer and Congressmember Jeffries have been silent concerning the MTA’s ongoing financial difficulties due to Governor Hochul placing $15 billion Congestion Pricing on pause. This has resulted in the MTA placing on hold numerous ADA and other capital improvements.

Most federal transportation grants require a 20 percent hard-cash local share. The FTA accepted toll credits from MTA instead of hard cash for the local share. This saves the MTA over $300 million annually.

In 2024, Washington made available $1.8 billion in assistance from various formula and national competitive discretionary grant programs to MTA.

The Federal Highway Administration has funding under several programs including Congestion Mitigation Air Quality (CMAQ), Surface Transportation Program (STP) and others, which can be transferred to the FTA to finance MTA capital projects.

It is the respective MTA Office of Federal Grants and Federal Transit Administration NY Region 2 who work together in the development, submittal and approval of grants. This is followed by implementation to insure these capital investment projects are completed on time, within budget accompanied by a minimum number of contract change orders documented as fair and reasonable. Schumer and Jeffries play no role in this.

There is a grant release process which FTA notifies Schumer and Jeffries prior to formal grant offer to the MTA. Too often as career politicians, Schumer and Jefferies ae seeking free publicity and take the credit for what others at the MTA & FTA actually delivered.

Sincerely,
Larry Penner

(Larry Penner is a transportation advocate, historian and writer who previously served as a former Director for the Federal Transit Administration Region 2 New York Office of Operations and Program Management. This included the development, review, approval and oversight for billions in capital projects and programs for New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority NYC Transit bus, subway and Staten Island Railway, Long Island and Metro North Rail Roads, MTA Bus, NJ Transit along with 30 other transit agencies in NY & NJ.

Walz’s Connection to Radical Islam

Dear Editor:

Kamala Harris’ choice as her running mate and Vice-President-to-be, Tim Walz, owes a load of explaining to Jews for his close association, friendship, relationship with and dependence on his state’s (Minnesota) leading Islamist and dangerous Imam, Asad Zaman, who happens to have, outspokenly, as his own personal hero, Adolph Hitler. And, Zaman, to all intents and purposes, as a firm follower of the Koran with its utter hatred for Jews and as a devotee of Hitler… just what do you think his intentions are for ALL Jews; Dems and Republicans alike? Take a guess? And remember, Walz has, by toeing the line of Radical Islam and all that entails, gotten heavy political backing from his state’s Muslim community in the past.

Walz now needs the votes of Muslims around the country and their supporters more than ever and this Imam guy will get them for him ONLY IF he obeys orders and does the right thing. Guaranteed! Tell that to your Democrat/Jewish relatives, friends, neighbors. Teach them the lessons of survival.

Thanks,
Alan Bergstein
