NEW YORK, NY – Eran Bornstein, MD, the vice chair of OB/GYN and the director of the Center for Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Northwell Lenox Hill Hospital, has been elected president of Fetal Medicine Foundation (FMF) USA. Dr. Bornstein, was appointed to the esteemed position by 20 board members of the prestigious charity, which aims to enhance the health of expectant mothers and babies by developing guidelines for first trimester maternal-fetal care.
“In this role as president of USA’s Fetal Medicine Foundation, I will strive to help medical providers across the country replicate Lenox Hill’s robust first trimester screening program that leverages expertise and the field’s latest advancements to screen for maternal and fetal complications,” said Dr. Bornstein. “By assessing the health of the pregnancy in the first trimester, we are able to personalize care and intervene earlier to ensure the best outcomes for mother and baby.”
FMF USA serves as the accreditation body for health care professionals across the country performing first trimester screenings for fetal chromosomal and structural abnormalities and for maternal health conditions, such as preeclampsia. To obtain, and subsequently maintain, the prerequisite accreditation to perform and interpret these assessments, providers must demonstrate the highest level of excellence in accordance with the foundation’s guidelines. These parameters stem from FMF’s significant investments into research aimed at enhancing early pregnancy diagnostics and care.
Renowned for excellence in fetal imaging, Dr. Bornstein will work to continually enhance FMF USA’s standard of care efforts by staying abreast of the latest advancements in diagnosis, treatment and technology. He will also build upon FMF’s reputation for educational excellence by broadening its digital training catalogue and convening international conferences featuring experts on topics ranging from prenatal sonography to developmental malformations.
Under Dr. Bornstein’s leadership, Lenox Hill’s Center for Maternal-Fetal Medicine became the first in New York State to receive a Detailed First Trimester Obstetrics Ultrasound accreditation from the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM), a multidisciplinary medical association of more than 9,000 health care professionals. The accreditation highlighted Lenox Hill as one of a few centers in the country with expertise to detect fetal birth defects during the first trimester. That helps ensure that every patient who undergoes a nuchal translucency scan can have a detailed anatomical evaluation via ultrasound and comprehensive preeclampsia assessments, including uterine artery Doppler scans. In addition, the center is unique in providing fetal neurosonography, a highly sophisticated evaluation of the fetal brain anatomy that is performed through the small space between the fetal skull bones.
Northwell Lenox Hill Hospital is renowned for comprehensive and advanced obstetric care. U.S. News and World Report named the hospital the 16th best in the nation for obstetrics and gynecology. Newsweek has also honored the hospital by listing it among “America’s Best Maternity Hospital” for two years in a row.
