In a scathing critique published in The New York Times, columnist Maureen Dowd did not hold back in her assessment of the Democratic Party’s underhanded efforts to push President Joe Biden out of the 2024 race, calling it nothing short of a “coup.” Drawing a striking parallel to the assassination of Julius Caesar, Dowd condemned the party’s elite for orchestrating what she sees as a betrayal of both the president and the voters who supported him.

Dowd’s column, “The Dems Are Delighted. But a Coup is Still a Coup,” comes just ahead of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where Democrats are poised to officially nominate Vice President Kamala Harris for the presidency. This decision, Dowd argues, is emblematic of everything wrong with the party’s current direction—a direction that seems to value empty slogans over genuine qualifications.

One of the most damning aspects of this political maneuvering is the fact that millions of Americans cast their votes in the Democratic primary for Joe Biden or his opponents, yet not a single voter chose Kamala Harris. The vice president, who has shown time and time again that she is more skilled at spouting slogans than delivering results, is now being thrust into the spotlight as the Democrats’ chosen candidate. It’s a shocking display of disregard for the will of the people and a blatant insult to the primary process.

Dowd calls out the key players in this “coup,” including former President Barack Obama, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. These powerful Democrats, she argues, played significant roles in Biden’s decision to step aside, all while publicly showering him with “grandiose flattery” after metaphorically stabbing him in the back. Even First Lady Jill Biden and Biden’s scandal-plagued son, Hunter, weren’t fooled by the insincerity of these gestures, according to Dowd.

Nancy Pelosi, in particular, is singled out for her conflicted role in this political bloodletting. As one of the most ruthless and successful tacticians in congressional history, Pelosi’s involvement in this betrayal is both unsurprising and deeply disappointing. Dowd suggests that Pelosi, while loyal to the institution of the House of Representatives, ultimately chose to prioritize her political legacy over her personal loyalty to Biden. “Et tu, Nancy?” Biden must have thought, Dowd speculates, as the betrayal unfolded.

The columnist also delves into the behind-the-scenes machinations that led to Biden’s withdrawal from the race, which was finalized on July 21. As polls showed Biden’s chances against former President Donald Trump dwindling, Democratic leaders decided that the welfare of the party—and, they claimed, the country—demanded Biden’s exit. Dowd doesn’t mince words in her criticism, noting that the decision was driven more by self-preservation than genuine concern for the nation’s future.

What’s most galling, however, is the euphoria and ecstasy that Dowd says has gripped the Democratic Party in the lead-up to the convention. The party is preparing for what they see as a “glorious coronation” of Kamala Harris, despite the deep divisions and simmering resentments among top Democrats. Behind the scenes, these same Democrats maneuvered to push an incumbent president out of the race—a move that Dowd likens to a political assassination, albeit one without the dramatic flair of “Julius Caesar.”

Harris, who failed to secure even a single vote during the primary process, is now being heralded as the future of the party.
