Don Lemon Sues Elon Musk Over Broken Partnership & Alleged Contract Breach

Edited by: TJVNews.com

In a dramatic turn of events, former CNN anchor Don Lemon has filed a lawsuit against Elon Musk, CEO of X, over a failed partnership with the social media platform. According to a report in The New York Post, the lawsuit, which was filed in San Francisco, accuses Musk and X executives of breaching their contract and tarnishing Lemon’s reputation following a contentious interview.

Lemon’s legal team, led by attorney Carney Shegerian, claims that the case is a clear-cut example of fraud and negligence. “X executives used Don to prop up their advertising sales pitch, then canceled their partnership and dragged Don’s name through the mud,” Shegerian stated, as was reported by The Post. “Don is an accomplished and hard-hitting journalist who’s committed to defending his good name and holding X’s executives accountable. We look forward to our day in court.”

The lawsuit centers around an agreement that Lemon allegedly had with X for a one-year deal. The deal was reportedly worth at least $1.5 million, along with a 60% share of ad revenue and performance-based bonuses tied to the number of followers his show attracted, as per the information provided in The Post report.   Furthermore, Lemon claims he was coerced into giving a speech lauding the platform to potential advertisers, which was part of the broader strategy to boost X’s advertising revenue.

The interview between Don Lemon and Elon Musk was meant to serve as the cornerstone for Lemon’s new show on X. However, the exchange quickly became confrontational, with Lemon pressing Musk on the issue of hate speech on the platform. The Post reported that this probing line of questioning did not sit well with Musk, who, shortly after the interview, contacted Lemon’s agent to terminate the deal. Musk’s dissatisfaction with the interview’s tone and content led to his decision to cancel the project.

On March 13, Musk took to social media to explain his decision to ax the show, criticizing Lemon for what he described as a lack of authenticity. Musk stated that Lemon’s approach was akin to “CNN, but on social media,” which he argued was a failing strategy given CNN’s declining viewership, according to the information contained in The Post report.  According to Lemon’s lawsuit, this incident marked the beginning of a series of actions by X executives that not only breached their contract but also damaged his professional reputation.

Adding to the complexity of the case are reports that Lemon had made substantial demands as part of his contract negotiations. These included a $5 million upfront payment, an $8 million annual salary, and an equity stake in the social media platform. The report in The Post explained that Lemon also allegedly requested a free Tesla Cybertruck, private jet trips to Las Vegas complete with a suite for him and his fiancé, and company-funded day drinking and massages.

The lawsuit highlights significant issues regarding contract enforcement and ethical business practices in the tech and media industries. Legal experts suggest that if Lemon’s claims hold up in court, it could lead to substantial financial and reputational repercussions for X and its executives.

As of now, Elon Musk has not publicly commented on the lawsuit. Musk’s silence leaves many questions unanswered about his perspective on the allegations and how X plans to address the situation.

Don Lemon’s career has been marked by several on-air controversies, contributing to his dismissal from CNN in April 2023. As was detailed in The Post report, one of the most notable incidents involved his comments about GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley, where he suggested she was not “in her prime” and thus unfit to comment on the age of other politicians. This statement drew widespread criticism and accusations of sexism.

Additionally, Lemon had a notorious off-camera clash with his co-host Kaitlan Collins, allegedly screaming at her in an incident that caused her to leave the studio. The report added that these controversies, coupled with the fallout from his interview with Musk, have fueled the narrative of Lemon as a divisive and controversial figure in the media landscape.
