Governor Kathy Hochul recently launched a “listening tour” to address the contentious issue of smartphone use in schools, hinting at a potential statewide ban on these devices in classrooms. This move stems from the observation that leaving the decision to individual school districts has not been effective. As she deliberates on the policy, expected to be unveiled later this year, Hochul acknowledges the complexities involved, especially given the pervasive nature of smartphones.

“Sometimes it’s just easier to blame the governor in the state of New York when you want something done,” Hochul remarked during a roundtable with educators at Guilderland High School. Her comments underline the challenges schools face in managing smartphone usage, an issue she sees as the next frontier after recent legislation granting parents more control over their children’s social media usage.

Smartphones have become a staple in students’ lives, offering both significant advantages and notable drawbacks in the educational context. Here, we explore the pros and cons of smartphones in the learning environment.

Pros of Smartphones in the Classroom

Cons of Smartphones in the Classroom

  5. Enforcement Challenges: As highlighted by the Pew Research survey cited by Hochul, enforcing smartphone policies is challenging for teachers. With 72% of high school teachers identifying smartphone use as a significant issue and 60% finding it difficult to enforce policies, schools struggle to maintain consistent discipline.

Governor Hochul’s proposed policy will need to balance these pros and cons carefully. While she acknowledges the necessity for parental contact in emergencies, she also emphasizes the need to mitigate the negative impacts of smartphones.
