During the recent debate, President Joe Biden’s age and perceived frailty became apparent, creating challenges for his campaign. From the earliest moments, Biden, 81, appeared less vigorous than his opponent, former President Donald Trump. According to a report on ABC News, his struggle with speech clarity and coherence raised questions about his capability to handle the rigorous demands of the presidency.

Biden’s difficulties were evident from the start. He spoke with a raspy voice, attributed to a cold, and displayed relatively little vigor or inflection. This lack of energy was particularly noticeable when he stumbled over his words and lines of argument, as was reported by ABC News.  One of the most striking moments occurred when he addressed a question about the national debt. Biden began to articulate a point about healthcare but faltered, ultimately trailing off into an incoherent comment about Medicare.

“We’re making sure that we’re able to make every single solitary person eligible for what I’ve been able to do with —” Biden said, before trailing off, as per the information in the ABC News report. “The Covid — excuse me, with — dealing with everything we have to do with — look — if — we finally beat Medicare.” His time ran out before he could clarify his point, leaving the audience and moderators puzzled.

Trump seized this opportunity to criticize Biden, quipping that Biden had “beat Medicare to death” when the moderators turned to him. This line drew laughter and underscored Trump’s strategy of highlighting Biden’s perceived weaknesses.

Another concerning moment came when Biden discussed immigration policy. He said, “I’m going to continue to move until we get the total ban on the — the total initiative, relative to what we can do with more Border Patrol and more asylum officers.” ABC News reported that the convoluted statement left Trump with an easy retort. “I really don’t know what he said at the end of that sentence. I don’t think he knows what he said either,” Trump remarked, further emphasizing the president’s struggle to communicate effectively.

Despite these early missteps, Biden gained some momentum as the debate progressed. He backed up his arguments with statistics and evidence, showcasing his knowledge and experience. However, ABC News noted that his hoarse voice and subdued demeanor continued to detract from his overall performance, reinforcing concerns about his age and health.

Biden’s age and health have been recurring themes throughout his presidency, and the debate highlighted these issues once again. While his campaign attributed his hoarseness and lack of vigor to a cold, the performance did little to dispel the concerns many Americans have about his ability to endure the demands of the office for another term.

The recent debate served as a critical moment in President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign. While he demonstrated preparedness and a strong grasp of policy, his age and health issues were prominently on display, providing fodder for his critics.

In the aftermath of the debate, Democrats have expressed unprecedented anxiety about Biden’s candidacy. The Washington Post reported that party members and strategists are more openly fretting about Biden’s ability to campaign effectively and lead the country for another term. A former Biden White House aide described his performance as “really disappointing,” encapsulating the sentiment that has begun to permeate through Democratic circles. These worries are expected to persist in the coming days, potentially influencing the strategic direction of Biden’s re-election campaign.

 


Although both candidates are in their late 70s, voters seem significantly more concerned about Biden’s age and health than Trump’s. This disparity was highlighted by a New York Times and Siena College poll conducted from June 20 to 25, in which only 16% of registered voters expressed concerns about Trump’s ability to handle the presidency due to his age, compared to 45% for Biden, as was reported by ABC News.  This included 15% of Democrats who doubted Biden’s capacity to serve effectively.

Despite being just three years younger than Biden, Trump, at 78, displayed a notably more vigorous and spry demeanor on the debate stage. His calmer, more respectful approach to the debate rules, including time limits and interruptions, marked a departure from his usual combative style, the ABC News report indicated. Trump’s clear and calm speaking style stood in stark contrast to Biden’s raspy and sometimes faltering delivery.

Trump capitalized on this advantage, appearing energetic and composed while addressing key issues. This performance played into the public perception that he is more capable of handling the demands of the presidency, a critical factor in a campaign where both candidates’ ages are under scrutiny.

One of the most significant moments of the debate was Trump’s handling of the abortion issue, particularly in light of the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade two years ago. This topic represents one of the most contentious and polarizing issues in American politics, and Trump sought to navigate it carefully.

When questioned about the Supreme Court’s decision in the Dobbs case, which overturned the long-standing precedent of Roe v. Wade, Trump downplayed his direct influence on the ruling. He claimed that the three justices he appointed “just so happened” to vote against the precedent, thereby distancing himself from the decision’s implications, ABC News reported.  He advocated for a more moderate conservative stance, suggesting that abortion policy should be left to the states, an approach that aligns with traditional conservative principles of states’ rights.

Biden countered this position by arguing that such a stance could lead to further rollbacks of reproductive rights, highlighting the potential risks of leaving abortion policies to individual states. He emphasized that this could result in significant disparities in access to abortion services across the country, potentially undermining women’s rights and health.

Biden criticized Trump for his controversial comments about the “very fine people on both sides” of the Charlottesville rally in 2017, Trump’s role in the January 6 Capitol attack, and his attempts to overturn the 2020 election results. Biden also highlighted Trump’s recent felony conviction, a significant political vulnerability for the former president.

Trump, however, did not shy away from repeating claims about Democratic positions on abortion. He asserted that Democratic leaders systematically favor late-term abortions and “aborting” babies after birth. ABC News said that Trump claimed that Democrats “support abortion up to and even beyond the ninth month,” contending that some Democratic states have adopted such stances.

Trump’s closing argument effectively summarized his key policy positions on taxes, deregulation, and economic growth. He reiterated his commitment to “make America great again,” a slogan that continues to resonate with his base. His forceful articulation of these points contrasted sharply with Biden’s muddled presentation, providing a stark choice for voters.

Trump’s performance was lauded by commentators on the Fox Business Channel, particularly Larry Kudlow. Kudlow highlighted Trump’s effective communication on tax cuts and economic growth, areas where he “absolutely smashed Biden.” Trump’s message on inflation and border security also struck a chord, presenting a sharp contrast to Biden’s perceived shortcomings in these areas.

Kudlow praised Trump for not taking the bait from Biden’s insults, instead focusing on a unifying message that resonated with voters. According to Kudlow, Trump’s performance on international issues, including Iran, Afghanistan, and China, as well as his vow to bring peace between Russia and Ukraine, underscored his capability to handle complex global challenges. Kudlow concluded that Trump’s assertive approach on these key issues made a compelling case for his leadership, describing it as a “home run.”

A Washington Post/George Mason University Schar School poll published this week focused on young swing-state “deciding” voters. The poll indicated that 38% of adults believed Biden would handle abortion better than Trump, who garnered 31% support in this area, according to ABC News. This suggests that on this critical issue, Biden maintains an edge among a key demographic.

However, real-time voter feedback, often referred to as “the dials” in campaign parlance, revealed some of Trump’s strategic missteps. Monitoring these live voter responses showed that Trump’s aggressive attacks on Biden did not resonate well, ABC News reported. This pattern mirrored his performance in the first 2020 debate, where overly aggressive tactics resulted in a 2.6 percentage point shift towards Biden in subsequent polls. This trend may have similarly limited Trump’s gains from Thursday’s debate.


Biden’s performance underscores a critical challenge for his campaign: reassuring voters about his stamina and capability to lead for another term. While some believe that his policy positions remain strong and resonant, particularly among key voter groups, the effectiveness of his communication is crucial for maintaining voter confidence.
