Nearly two dozen individuals were arrested by late Monday morning as a group of self-proclaimed climate activists attempted to blockade Citi Headquarters in Lower Manhattan. According to police reports, approximately 150 activists gathered in front of the financial giant’s building on Greenwich Street near North Moore Street in Tribeca during the morning rush.
The demonstrators, in their quest to draw attention, caused significant disruption to the daily commute and operations in the area, the NY Post reported.
Twenty-three people were taken into custody, based on an initial NYPD count. The group chanted slogans like, “Planet over profit!” as officers began to detain some of the participants. Their loud and aggressive tactics were aimed at drawing media attention, but they also caused considerable inconvenience to pedestrians and employees who were simply trying to go about their day.
One man, featured in a video posted on an X account named “Planet Over Profit,” claimed, “They’ve arrested dozens of us today because we’re out here for the kickoff to Summer of Heat. CitiBank is funding … hundreds of billions of dollars to the fossil fuel industry, while putting all of our lives at risk.” He added, “People are taking arrest over and over throughout the summer to let CitiBank know and to let Wall Street know they can’t keep funding and financing destruction and death across the globe.”
