Nearly two dozen individuals were arrested by late Monday morning as a group of self-proclaimed climate activists attempted to blockade Citi Headquarters in Lower Manhattan. According to police reports, approximately 150 activists gathered in front of the financial giant’s building on Greenwich Street near North Moore Street in Tribeca during the morning rush.
The demonstrators, in their quest to draw attention, caused significant disruption to the daily commute and operations in the area, the NY Post reported.
Twenty-three people were taken into custody, based on an initial NYPD count. The group chanted slogans like, “Planet over profit!” as officers began to detain some of the participants. Their loud and aggressive tactics were aimed at drawing media attention, but they also caused considerable inconvenience to pedestrians and employees who were simply trying to go about their day.
One man, featured in a video posted on an X account named “Planet Over Profit,” claimed, “They’ve arrested dozens of us today because we’re out here for the kickoff to Summer of Heat. CitiBank is funding … hundreds of billions of dollars to the fossil fuel industry, while putting all of our lives at risk.” He added, “People are taking arrest over and over throughout the summer to let CitiBank know and to let Wall Street know they can’t keep funding and financing destruction and death across the globe.”

Monday’s protest marked the beginning of what they are calling the “Summer of Heat on Wall Street.” Organizers describe it as “a months-long campaign of relentless and disruptive protests to end Wall Street funding for oil, coal, and gas,” according to a media alert. The demonstrators plan to return to the Greenwich Street skyscraper on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, ensuring continued disturbances.
This disruptive and alarmist behavior exemplifies a wider trend among climate change activists who insist on spreading fear and misinformation. They allege catastrophic consequences without acknowledging the significant scientific debate and skepticism surrounding global warming. Rather than engaging in constructive dialogue, these activists resort to tactics that inconvenience ordinary citizens and law enforcement officers alike.
Their claims about funding “destruction and death” are steeped in hyperbole, ignoring the complex realities of energy needs and economic development. The fossil fuel industry, often vilified by these activists, plays a crucial role in providing energy security and economic stability worldwide. This nuanced perspective, however, is often lost amid the activists’ dramatic and unfounded assertions. Their arguments fail to consider the broader implications of completely divesting from fossil fuels, which could lead to economic instability and energy shortages.
In reality, the climate debate is far from settled, with many experts questioning the accuracy of dire predictions and the efficacy of proposed solutions. A growing number of scientists and researchers have expressed skepticism about the more extreme claims made by climate activists. They argue that the models predicting catastrophic warming are based on assumptions that may not hold true. Moreover, technological advancements in fossil fuel extraction and use have significantly reduced their environmental impact.
Yet, these activists persist in their one-sided narrative, disregarding the broader implications of their demands. Their actions on Wall Street are just another example of their disruptive and divisive approach, which does little to advance meaningful discussion or practical solutions. Instead of fostering open dialogue, they shut down any dissenting opinions.
