(TJV) Israel’s official tally of individuals held captive in the Gaza Strip stands at 134, primarily Israeli citizens with some foreigners, including potentially deceased victims. Despite ongoing negotiations for a ceasefire in Qatar, Haaretz reports that Israeli authorities believe only 60 to 70 of these Israeli hostages may still be alive.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirm that 134 individuals, both hostages and bodies, are held in Gaza. Among them, 36 have been confirmed deceased, with 10 foreigners among the remaining 98 hostages. Recently, families were informed that 20 captives are in critical condition, though there are concerns that the actual number of survivors may be even lower.
Given the intense conflict across Gaza, it’s speculated that hostages are being held in the extensive network of underground tunnels controlled by Hamas. There’s a grim possibility that some hostages may have been casualties of Israeli airstrikes, mistakenly targeted amid the bombardment of neighborhoods.
Criticism mounts against Israeli leadership, with families accusing Prime Minister Netanyahu of prioritizing military objectives over hostage rescue efforts. Testimonies from previously freed hostages reveal fears of being targeted by Israeli attacks while held in vulnerable above-ground locations, rather than safer underground tunnels.
Protests by victims’ families persist in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, urging for a ceasefire. Netanyahu faces internal accusations of hindering truce negotiations to prolong the conflict, raising questions about his political future.
