Former New York Governor David Paterson has made serious allegations against his alma mater, Hofstra University, asserting that he faced discrimination due to his support for a casino near the school on Long Island, The NY Post reported.
Paterson, who now serves at Sands Casino, contends that Hofstra went to lengths to hinder his involvement in campus events, even going so far as to restrict access for nonprofits associated with him and Sands.
Paterson claims that Hofstra’s opposition to the casino extended to preventing predominantly black groups, including nonprofits, from utilizing campus facilities. He asserts that his own participation in a congressional forum as a panelist was denied solely due to his support for Sands, despite his willingness to separate personal advocacy from campus engagements.
Responding to these allegations, a spokesperson for Hofstra University emphasized the institution’s dedication to inclusion and denied any discrimination against Paterson. The university representative clarified that Paterson remains welcome on campus and that his participation in the congressional forum had already been approved. Paterson, alongside Tracey Edwards of NAACP Long Island, who also works for Sands, penned a letter to Hofstra’s board of trustees, condemning the alleged discrimination and restrictions imposed on them and associated nonprofits. The letter described the university’s actions as “outrageous” and “despicable,” accusing it of behaving like a “school yard bully” and undermining efforts for equality and inclusion.
