Hunter Biden Makes Surprise Appearance at House Oversight Meeting; Bolts For the Door When MTG Speaks

Hunter Biden made a surprise appearance on Capitol Hill Wednesday morning, showing up with his attorneys at a House Oversight Committee meeting as lawmakers were considering a resolution to hold him in contempt of Congress. The resolution, if passed, would set up a full House vote to hold him in contempt for defying a congressional subpoena.  The lawful subpoena compelled him to appear for a closed-door deposition before the House Oversight and Judiciary committees last month.

“The House Committees on Oversight and Accountability and Judiciary issued subpoenas to Hunter Biden for a deposition to be conducted on December 13, 2023,” said Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.)

“On December 13, Hunter Biden failed to comply with the deposition subpoenas relevant to the House of Representatives’ impeachment inquiry and the Committees’ oversight investigations. Instead, Hunter Biden appeared on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol where he read a short, prepared statement without taking any questions from the media,” Comer added.

“Our investigation has produced significant evidence suggesting President Biden knew of, participated in and benefited from his family cashing in on the Biden name,” House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer said in his opening statement. “We planned to question Hunter Biden about this record of evidence during our deposition, but he blatantly defied two lawful subpoenas.”

Comer added, “Hunter Biden’s willful refusal to comply with the committees’ subpoenas is a criminal act” that “constitutes contempt of Congress and warrants referral to the appropriate United States Attorney’s Office for prosecution as prescribed by law.”

Biden had offered to testify publicly, but Comer and Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan insisted that he come in for a private deposition first, as it’s been done with dozens of other witnesses for both parties.

“We will not provide Hunter Biden with special treatment because of his last name,” Comer said. “All Americans must be treated equally under the law. And that includes the Bidens.”

All hell broke loose in the chamber as Biden, his attorneys Abbe Lowell and *Kevin Morris entered the room and sat in the audience. Almost as if the move was a coordinated stunt, Democrat lawmakers requested that Biden be allowed to take impromptu questions during the session. Republicans rejected the request.

Hunter and his lawyers entered the room as Ranking Democrat Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) was delivering a soliloquy defending him and attacking the motives of the GOP.

There “is no precedent for the U.S. House of Representatives holding a private citizen in contempt of Congress who has offered to testify in public, under oath and on a day of the committee’s choosing. Chairman Comer repeatedly urged Hunter Biden to appear at a committee hearing, and Hunter Biden agreed,” said Raskin.

Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) tried to get a word in, but was constantly interrupted by her Democrat colleagues.

“My first question is who bribed Hunter Biden to be here today?” she began. “That is my first question. Second question, you are the epitome of White privilege coming into the Oversight Committee, spitting in our face, ignoring a congressional subpoena to be deposed. What are you afraid of? You have no balls to come up here and –” Mace continued before being shouted down by a Democrat on the committee.

“If the gentlelady wants to hear from Hunter Biden she can hear from him right now,” interjected Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.). “Let’s take a vote and hear from Hunter Biden, what are you afraid of?”

After more back and forth shouting and insults, Mace continued: “I think that Hunter Biden should be arrested right here, right now. Go straight to jail. Our nation is founded on the rule of law and the premise that the law applies equally to everyone no matter what your last name is,” she added, before being interrupted again by another Democrat.

As Biden was walking out, a scrum of reporters shouted out questions, and one person asked, “Are you on crack today?” and “what kind of crack do you normally smoke, Mr. Biden?”

Lowell briefly addressed reporters with a planned statement.

“Hunter Biden is and was a private citizen. Despite this, Republicans have sought to use him as a surrogate to attack his father,” Lowell said. “And, despite their improper partisan motives, on six different occasions since February of 2023, we have offered to work with the House committees to see what and how relevant information to any legitimate inquiry could be provided.” Lowell claimed that their “first five offers were ignored.”

“And then in November, they issued a subpoena for a behind closed doors deposition, a tactic that the Republicans have repeatedly misused in their political crusade to selectively leak and mischaracterize what witnesses have said,” Lowell said, despite the Democrats’ long habit of doing the same.

Lowell claimed Comer made an “explicit offer that people like Hunter…had the option to attend a deposition or a public hearing, whichever they chose.”

“Hunter chose a hearing where Republicans could not distort manipulate, or misuse that testimony,” the lawyer continued. Echoing Raskin’s earlier comments, Lowell called the move to hold Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress “unprecedented” in light of his offer to “publicly answer all their proper questions.”

“The question there is, what are they afraid of?” Lowell asked.

Later in the hearing, the Oversight Committee held a vote on whether to allow Greene to display redacted naked photos of Hunter Biden before Congress. The  committee voted along party lines, 21-to-15, to allow the photos.

George Papadopoulos, a low-level foreign policy advisor to Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign who was targeted and scapegoated by the FBI during their discredited Crossfire Hurricane investigation, noted on Twitter that if he had refused to testify in front of the house oversight committee in 2018 when asked to, “I would have been arrested.”

If the resolution advances out of the House Oversight Committee as well, a full contempt of Congress vote on the House floor could come as early as next week.

*Kevin Morris reportedly met Hunter at a December 2019 fundraiser for then-presidential candidate Joe Biden, and quickly became the younger Biden’s confidante.

The Hollywood lawyer has reportedly lent Hunter more than $2 million to cover family expenses and pay back taxes, and according to Hunter’s art gallerist Georges Bergès, Morris purchased most of Hunter’s artwork for $875,000 in January 2023. Although the White House claimed in 2021 that it had established ethics protocols to  ensure that the identities of buyers would be kept secret, Hunter and Morris allegedly “figured out the financial implications” of that deal, Comer said after Bergès was interviewed Tuesday.
