In a targeted strike in Syria’s capital, Damascus, on Monday, a senior Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commander, Brigadier General Razi Mousavi, also known as Sayyed Razi, was assassinated, sparking a promise of retaliation from the IRGC against Israel, as was reported on TheNationalNews.com website. Brig Gen Mousavi, a close associate of the late IRGC leader Qassem Suleimani, who was killed by the US forces in Iraq in 2020, played a significant role in supporting the “resistance front” in Syria, according to the IRGC media arm.
The IRGC, in a statement, affirmed that the “usurping and barbaric Zionist regime will pay for this crime, without a doubt,” signaling heightened tensions between Iran and Israel in the already volatile region, as was noted on thenationalnews.com web site. Brig Gen Mousavi was renowned as one of the longest-serving and prominent military advisers of the IRGC in Syria, overseeing support and logistics for the IRGC’s Quds Force in the country, the report added. His death follows several previous attempts on his life.
The strike, reportedly hitting Mousavi’s residence in the Damascus suburb of Sayeda Zainab, triggered explosions, as captured in videos circulated by Syrian media, depicting smoke rising in the area, according to the report on thenationalnews.com web site. While Israel has been known to target Iranian terrorists and military advisers in Syria, the Israeli army spokesperson, Admiral Daniel Hagari, declined to confirm responsibility, emphasizing the Israeli army’s focus on maintaining the country’s security interests.
“The Israeli army’s duty is to maintain Israel’s security interests,” Admiral Hagari said.
The events unfold amid heightened hostilities between Israel and Iran, with Israel intensifying its strikes on Iran-linked sites in Syria since the Iran-backed Hamas terror group’s unprecedented attacks in southern Israel on October 7. On that day, Hamas terrorists from Gaza brutally murdered 1200 Israelis and others. Evidence has surfaced that women were raped, babies were beheaded and people were burned alive. The shockwaves from these events prompted Israel’s retaliation with an air and ground assault on Gaza, resulting in casualties on both sides, as was reported on TheNationalNews.com web site.
In a broader context, the Axis of Resistance, an alliance of Iran-backed terror groups across the Middle East, has expressed military support for Hamas in Gaza. Lebanon’s Hezbollah, which is also backed by Iran and serves as a proxy in the region engaged in a cross-border conflict with Israel, aiming to divert attention from the ongoing war in Gaza and operates not only in Lebanon but also in Syria, the report added. Additionally, Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis have targeted Israel-linked ships in the Red Sea, demanding an end to Israel’s actions in Gaza and the delivery of humanitarian aid.
Hundreds of trucks carrying aid for civilians in Gaza have crossed through Rafah on the Egyptian border, however, evidence has proved that the aid is being stolen by Hamas operatives. Currently, Hamas runs their operations from a labyrinth of sophisticated tunnels under Gaza.
Amidst these regional tensions, a video shared on Iranian media showcased Brig Gen Mousavi reciting a dream where Gen Suleimani tells him, “Sayyed Razi, you’re getting on in years. It’s time for you to be martyred as well.” The dream, shared prior to his assassination, adds to the unfolding narrative of conflict and reprisal in the Middle East.
