Intense Confrontation Between IDF & Hamas Inside Gaza School Shows Signs of Terror Group’s Weakness
Edited by: Fern Sidman
Dramatic footage released on Friday showcases a tense standoff between Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers and Hamas terrorists inside the remains of a school building in Gaza City’s Shejaiya neighborhood, according to a recently published report in the New York Post. The confrontation, involving members of the elite LOTAR Unit and the 188th Armored Brigade’s 74th Battalion, unfolded as Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant expressed confidence that Hamas’ grip in the Gaza Strip is “beginning to break” after more than two months of conflict, the Post report noted.
The IDF footage captures the intense encounter between IDF fighters and a Hamas cell within the school’s confines. The elite LOTAR Unit, along with tank fire support from the 74th Battalion, engaged in a bullet-ridden confrontation with the terrorists who attempted to draw the forces into an ambush using gunfire and explosives, as was reported by the Post. The IDF reported that the terrorists were successfully eliminated during the operation.
Following the confrontation, IDF troops conducted a thorough search of the school premises and uncovered a tunnel shaft located in one of the classrooms, the report in the Post said. The tunnel was reported to connect to a nearby mosque and was allegedly utilized by Hamas operatives.
Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, attending a Hanukkah candle lighting ceremony with the Border Defense Corps’ Caracal Battalion, highlighted positive signs for Israel. As was indicated in the Post report, after more than two months of war, Gallant stated that there are indications that Hamas is “beginning to break in Gaza.” He commended the significant role played by female members of the IDF, emphasizing the success of the mixed-gender Caracal Battalion.
Israel has been actively pursuing Hamas in Gaza since October 7, when an estimated 3,000 terrorists stormed southern Israel, leading to a wave of violence resulting in the deaths of more than 1,200 Israelis. The Post report said that while a weeklong cease-fire last month facilitated the release of over 100 civilian hostages taken on October 7, renewed fighting occurred due to disagreements over the order of continued hostage releases.
On Friday evening, warning sirens sounded over Tel Aviv, signaling a potential threat from rockets fired from the Gaza Strip, heightening tensions in the region, the Post report said. The ongoing conflict underscores the complex dynamics and challenges faced by both the IDF and Hamas in the pursuit of their respective objectives.
Israel’s mobile air defense system, the Iron Dome, successfully intercepted rockets fired from Gaza. A video shared by Times of Israel reporter Emmanuel Fabian showcased the night sky lit up by the interception, the Post reported.
Hamas operatives began surrendering to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), according to military spokesperson Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari. The Post reported that fierce battles with Hamas terrorists hiding underground resulted in numerous surrenders, with over 200 suspects arrested in the past 48 hours.
Israel confirmed the military’s gathering of Hamas terrorists who had surrendered in northern Gaza for interrogation in the search for others. Images emerged showing the Hamas terrorists sitting in the streets in Beit Lahiya. Israeli troops reportedly detained men and boys in a converted school shelter.
Israeli planes dropped leaflets in central Gaza’s refugee camps in Nuseirat and Maghazi, conveying a stern message to Hamas leaders, according to the Post report. The leaflets invoked religious verses, emphasizing proportional retaliation and condemning deliberate attacks on civilians.
Meanwhile, the UN Security Council convened an emergency meeting to address the “catastrophic situation” in the Gaza Strip. The Post report said that UN Secretary-General António Guterres invoked Article 99 of the UN Charter, calling for a permanent cease-fire. Guterres condemned Israel, stating that the brutality of one party does not justify collective punishment against the Palestinian people.
Several delegations, including Russia, China, and the United Arab Emirates, echoed calls for an immediate cease-fire to halt the hostilities and facilitate humanitarian efforts in Gaza, as was reported by the Post. The international community emphasized the need to prioritize civilian protection and alleviate the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region.
In contrast, the United States backed Israel’s concerns, asserting that an immediate cease-fire would only prolong Hamas’ “reign of terror” in the region. As was noted in the Post report, Deputy Permanent Representative Robert A. Wood emphasized that the U.S. supports a durable peace but opposes an immediate cease-fire, arguing that it could set the stage for future conflicts, given Hamas’ reluctance towards a two-state solution.
Wood criticized the Security Council for its failure to condemn the events of October 7, underscoring what he described as a “fundamental disconnect” between discussions within the council and the realities on the ground, according to the Post report. The lack of consensus on a draft resolution during the meeting highlighted the complexity of finding a diplomatic solution to the crisis.
The meeting adjourned without reaching an agreement on a new draft resolution to address the escalating conflict, the Post reported. The Security Council planned to reconvene later in the day, highlighting the ongoing challenges in navigating the diplomatic landscape amid the heightened tensions in the Israel-Hamas conflict.
