Violence Erupts as Anti-Israel Protesters Invade DNC Offices on DC; Clash with Capitol Police

Edited by: Fern Sidman

In a disturbing turn of events, on Wednesday evening, a sizable group of anti-Israel protesters clashed with US Capitol Police outside the Democratic National Committee (DNC) headquarters in Washington, DC, as was reported by the New York Post.  The confrontation escalated to the point of evacuation for politicians within the building, the report added. The clash occurred just a day after a massive gathering at the National Mall to support Israel’s actions against Hamas.

Video footage captured the intensity of the clash, with officers in riot gear attempting to push back the protesters who charged towards the Canal Street and Ivy Street, SE building, according to the Post report. The protesters, numbering around 150, were described as engaging in illegal and violent actions, including attempts to breach metal barricades.

Moments before the clash erupted, video footage portrayed the protesters standing calmly on the steps of the DNC with linked arms, singing “Which side are you on?” The Post report indicated that many of them wore black shirts bearing the slogan “Cease Fire Now,” indicating their stance against the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Among those evacuated from the DNC building was Rep. Brad Sherman (R-Calif.), who reported on social media that the protest took a violent turn, with pepper spray deployed against police officers and attempts to breach the building, as was noted in the Post report.

Sherman posted on X.com earlier on Wednesday evening, “Was just evacuated from the #DNC after pro-terrorist, anti-#Israel protestors grew violent, pepper spraying police officers and attempting to break into the building. Thankful to the police officers who stopped them and for helping me and my colleagues get out safely,” the Post reported

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) highlighted the concerning situation by revealing she had her three-month-old baby inside the Capitol when the buildings went into lockdown, the Post reported. Luna said, “Imagine being that unhinged. Nut jobs .

In response to the escalating situation, officials sent alerts to congressional staffers, announcing a lockdown in House office buildings, the report in the Post said. The Capitol Police made arrests, although the exact number was not disclosed. The Metropolitan Police Department also responded to the disturbance, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.

The clash unfolded a day after a significant gathering at the National Mall where approximately 300,000 people congregated to express their support for Israel’s actions against Hamas, according to the Post report.  The contrast between the peaceful assembly on Tuesday by those attending the “March for Israel” and the subsequent violent clash underscores the complexity and deep divisions surrounding the issue that has exploded around the world.
