Biden Praises Gov. Newsom & Reflects on Bay Area Leadership at APEC Conference

Edited by: TJVNew.com

In a lighthearted moment at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) conference, President Joe Biden took a moment to acknowledge California Governor Gavin Newsom and share his thoughts on Newsom’s political future, as was reported by the Washington Examiner. Speaking at a reception for APEC leaders, Biden expressed gratitude for Newsom’s leadership as governor and playfully suggested that Newsom could have the job he himself is currently occupying.

“I want to talk about Gov. Newsom,” Biden remarked, according to the report in the Washington Examiner. “He’s been one hell of a governor, man. As a matter of fact, he can be anything he wants. He can have the job I’m looking for.”

Despite being a vocal supporter of Biden’s potential 2024 reelection, Newsom has faced accusations of running a “shadow campaign” for the presidency. As was noted in the Washington Examiner report, the governor’s high-profile domestic and international travels, including a recent trip to China, have fueled speculation about his political ambitions. Newsom’s active role at APEC, such as greeting Chinese President Xi Jinping and hosting a fundraiser for Biden, has only added to the speculation.

Biden also took a moment to acknowledge Vice President Kamala Harris, another figure hailing from the San Francisco Bay Area. Highlighting the region’s influence, Biden expressed gratitude to the Bay Area for providing the platform for Vice President Harris to ascend to her current position, the Washington Examiner reported. He commended Harris as an outstanding leader and a great partner in the administration.

“I’m particularly grateful for the Bay Area for giving our great vice president the chance to become vice president,” Biden stated.

According to the Washington Examiner report, current San Francisco Mayor London Breed did not escape Biden’s attention, as he remarked that she had “the hardest job in American politics.” These comments came during a reception that featured a performance by Gwen Stefani, who thanked the president and First Lady Jill Biden for hosting her, the report in the Washington Examiner said. She performed renditions of “Sweet Escape” and “Hey Baby.”

Biden’s presence at the reception marked the culmination of his first full day at APEC, dominated by a crucial meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The report in the Washington Examiner said that looking ahead, the president is scheduled to participate in various APEC events, including speaking at the CEO Summit, attending the APEC Informal Dialogue and Working Lunch, joining the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework family photo event, and participating in the Heads of Delegation for the APEC Dinner.

As the APEC conference unfolds, Biden’s comments on Newsom, Harris, and Breed underscore the significance of the Bay Area’s political influence and the interconnected relationships within the Democratic leadership. The lighthearted banter also provides a glimpse into the camaraderie and dynamics among key political figures during this international gathering.
