During a tele-town hall meeting, celebrity “woke” Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, made headlines with her comments on Israel’s “indiscriminate bombing” in Gaza and comments on the trend of New Yorkers fleeing the city.
The New York Post noted Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez stated on Monday that U.S. military aid to Israel is, in her view, contributing to “violations of human rights” in Gaza.
During a tele-town hall meeting, a caller suggested defunding Israel due to alleged genocide and redirecting the funds for humanitarian assistance in Gaza, which has been under siege since a terror attack by Hamas on October 7.
AOC expressed sympathy with the caller’s concerns and emphasized the need to tie the billions of dollars in aid to Israel to human rights standards and the prevention of “war crimes.” She acknowledged the reprehensible actions of Hamas but argued against condoning the killing of Gaza residents in response.
Previously, Ocasio-Cortez accused Israel of committing “war crimes” in retaliation against Hamas, resulting in casualties, mainly civilians. She emphasized that war crimes should not justify further war crimes. AOC referenced estimates of a significant disparity in casualties between Gaza residents and Hamas terrorists, deeming it unacceptable for public resources to fund what she perceives as gross human rights violations.
She criticized Israel’s “indiscriminate bombing” in Gaza as unsustainable and unlikely to lead to a peaceful solution with Palestinians. Israel, in response, asserted the necessity of protecting the country from terrorist attacks and highlighted the challenge posed by terrorists hiding within the civilian population.
Ocasio-Cortez claimed that support for a cease-fire and linking funding to Israel with human rights considerations is gaining traction in Congress.
In remarks less controversial, AOC spoke of the trend of working-class residents leaving New York City due to its exorbitant living costs.
In the same tele-town hall meeting, the congresswoman addressed the issue in the context of the ongoing migrant crisis and Mayor Eric Adams’ controversial budget proposal. The mayor’s plan involves widespread cuts, impacting essential services like the police force, education, libraries, and cultural arts programs.
Expressing concern during the discussion, Ocasio-Cortez questioned why city officials, including the mayor and council, were not considering increasing taxes on the affluent population. She specifically highlighted potential sources of revenue such as taxing expensive pied-à-terre residences or luxury accommodations owned by the ultra-rich who frequently travel internationally.
Despite claims that imposing higher taxes on the wealthy could lead to their departure, the far left congresswoman argued that available data does not support this notion. She referred to recent census data, which indicates that a growing number of high-income individuals, including billionaires, have indeed relocated from the city.
Contrary to popular belief, Ocasio-Cortez emphasized that the primary demographic leaving the city is not the wealthiest stratum of society. Instead, it is the working class that is finding it increasingly challenging to afford living in New York City. The affordability crisis, she asserted, is a significant factor contributing to the migration of residents, raising questions about the sustainability of the city’s economic landscape.
