SoHo House Expands to Upstate NY, British Members Only Club Continues to Grow in US

A prestigious British members-only brand is expanding its presence in upstate New York. Soho House, a UK-born private club that has been in the United States for two decades, recently celebrated its anniversary at its New York City location with a grand party and an intimate poolside musical performance by Lauryn Hill, NY Post reported.

Now, the brand has unveiled plans for its inaugural countryside retreat in the US, one of 20 new locations it aims to open by 2025.

The new venue will be nestled in the picturesque Hudson Valley town of Rhinebeck, New York. Named Grasmere House, it will occupy the historic Grasmere estate, covering 250 acres that once served as a working farm.

While an official opening date has yet to be announced, Soho House envisions Grasmere House as a place that seamlessly blends nature and luxury. It will feature meticulously restored 19th-century buildings, anchored by a historic manor house. In addition to accommodations, the retreat will offer various dining options, outdoor activities like hiking and cycling, and a spa and wellness center.

The design of Grasmere House will draw inspiration from the nearby woodlands, incorporating natural elements reminiscent of the historic Roycrofters arts and crafts movement from the 1800s.

Since establishing its first American location in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District in 2003, Soho House has opened 14 other exclusive clubs in eight different US cities, comprising only a portion of its global network of 40 clubs. While not all the forthcoming club locations have been disclosed yet, they are set to be situated in the UK, Latin America, and North America. Soho House Mexico City is scheduled to open this month, followed by Soho House Portland and Sao Paulo later this year. Additionally, Soho House Charleston is on track to make its debut in 2024.

Andrew Carnie, the CEO of Soho House & Co., has emphasized the brand’s plans for growth in major US cities, particularly in New York and Los Angeles. He sees significant opportunities in North America, driven by thriving cities and evolving dynamics, especially in the post-Covid era when people have relocated from major urban hubs. Soho House aims to cater to these changing lifestyles and preferences.
