Monday was a day of pride for the Caban family as they celebrated the swearing in of relative Edward Caban as the first Latino NYPD Commissioner.
Caban, 55, the son of a transit police officer who served with Mayor Adams when the now-mayor was on the transit force, said he joined the NYPD as “a young Puerto Rican kid” at a time when “the top bosses of the police department didn’t really look like me.”
As joyous as an occasion as it was for the Caban family as well as other New Yorkers and Latinos everywhere, one needs to pause and consider the reality of the situation.
Will Caban be able to succeed in getting the crime statistics down in New York City? Well, after only 18 months the first black female NYPD Chief Keechant Sewell said goodbye to this often arduous job. While the reasons she gave or didn’t give for leaving her post are unclear, the one thing that we do know if that the deck is stacked against just about anyone who would take this hot-seat position.
The facts on the ground are these: The NYPD and police forces all over the country do not receive the respect, admiration and support of the general public as they once did.
Thanks to the George Floyd debacle, the police in such cities as the Big Apple have morphed into the “sworn enemy” and the constant battle cry of “defund the police” can still be heard, loud and clear and on an incessant basis.
In New York City, the new NYPD commissioner will have to deal with the same bizarre bail reform laws that are geared to ensure that violent criminals continue to walk freely through the streets of Gotham as these repeat offenders live their lives with judicial impunity.
The new commissioner will also have to deal with the “soft on crime” George Soros sponsored Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg, whose raison d’etre is to create an infrastructure in which criminals are never truly held fully or even partially responsible for the illegal deeds that they commit.
If that weren’t enough to contend with, the new NYPD commissioner will also have to grapple with the New York City council, and the office of the governor of the Empire State.
Let’s be clear and let’s not mince words. The malevolent force of the woke, progressive camp is in full swing. Their mission is to make it as difficult as humanly possible for New York City police officers to carry out their duties effectively. For those not in the know, the NYPD is constantly help up to impossible levels of fierce scrutiny which is why we have witnessed a mass exodus of competent officers from the force. Many are opting for early retirement.
One particular loathsome example of how New York’s finest are treated these days can be witnessed through the most excessive amount of paperwork that they are legally compelled to produce to the powers that be in order to prove they are doing their job.
For her part, Governor Hochul is all aboard the left wing, liberal train that promulgates the mantra that the “citizens” are being brutalized by law enforcement and therefore the only remedy to this dilemma is to come down hard on those who sacrifice their lives each and every day to protect ours.
So, with that being said, how can any person in the role of NYPD commissioner actually succeed in this challenging position? With such glaring lack of support and with such palpable animosity directed towards the police, it is practically impossible to make any dent in the rampant crime wave that has gripped this city.
Yes, Commissioner Caban has an uphill battle on his hands in a world that was hijacked by the radical left and the Marxist revolution that they are orchestrating. As these nefarious forces continue to denigrate the New York Police Department, we can only expect more of the same. And that is abysmally tragic.
We lend our complete support to Commissioner Caban and feverishly hope that he can help restore the dignity of the force and through this leadership assist in tamping down crime in our fair city.
