Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani made a surprising appearance at the Long Island home of the suspected Gilgo Beach serial killer over the weekend, as was reported by the New York Post. Driving up to the residence, Giuliani engaged with law enforcement officers, inquiring how close he could get to the home. However, he remained inside his car throughout his visit, while the property was being searched by investigators, the Post report said.
A spokesperson for Giuliani stated that the former mayor was there to cover the case as part of his new show, “America’s Mayor Live.” The Post also reported that Giuliani, renowned for his role as a federal prosecutor, commended the efforts of all involved in the case while acknowledging that more work is needed to ensure justice is served.
Ted Goodman, Giuliani’s political advisor, told The Post in a statement on Saturday night. “The mayor commends all involved in the case, but knows there is still work to be done in order to deliver justice.”
During the search of the alleged killer’s home, investigators donned hazmat suits, gloves, and head coverings to protect themselves.
“We’re just going through his house looking to see if there’s any evidence,” a police source told The Post of the search of the alleged killer’s home. “If he has any trophies.”
The Post also reported that their primary objective was to seek evidence, including any possible trophies the suspect might have kept from his victims. The gravity of the situation was heightened when officers discovered a wooden and glass display case containing a blond, child-size doll wearing a red dress inside,
As law enforcement went about their work, neighbors in the area held a block party, seemingly juxtaposing the normalcy of everyday life against the grim reality unfolding nearby. The Post reported that one resident shared her astonishment at realizing that a suspected serial killer had been living just around the corner from her family. Another recalled a visit by her mother, who had been a census taker and had entered the suspect’s home back in 2010. The home’s state at the time was described as unkempt and unsettling.
He said hello to my son,” the woman, a mom of three who gave her name as Megan, recalled, as was reported by the Post.
“I’ve never spoken to them. … I was surprised. You don’t expect a suspected serial killer to be living around the corner.”
Erica Harmon, who grew up six houses down the street, said her mom once visited the house as a North Babylon census taker, the Post reported.
Detectives spoke to the older woman, who now lives in Florida, about the experience.
“My mother worked for the census back in 2010 and she was allowed in the house and she noticed it was a disgusting mess,” Harmon said, according to the Post report. “It was like a pigsty.”
The suspect, Rex Heuermann, was known in Midtown, Manhattan, where he worked as an architect in a local office building. The Post also reported that the owner of a sandwich shop he frequented, Gardenia Deli, expressed shock and disgust upon learning about Heuermann’s alleged crimes. The shop owner described Heuermann as a regular customer who didn’t talk much but visited every two weeks or so.
“He’s my regular customer,” said Hassan Alborat, owner of Gardenia Deli on Eighth Avenue between 30th Street and 31st Street, the Post reported. “It’s disgusting. He never talk a lot, just buy a sandwich, sometimes soda or water.”
While Heuermann’s daughter does not live at the home in question, she occasionally visits. The revelation of her connection to the suspect elicited sympathy from a former neighbor, who described the situation as “sad and scary,” the Post report said.
The case has sent shockwaves through the community, with residents coming to terms with the proximity of alleged darkness amidst their peaceful neighborhoods. The involvement of a prominent figure like Rudy Giuliani in covering the unfolding events further underscores the gravity of the situation.
As the investigation continues and justice seeks to be served for the victims, the community remains united in their sorrow and determination to see the truth prevail. It serves as a stark reminder that evil can lurk in unexpected places and how important it is for law enforcement to diligently pursue the truth, no matter where it may lead.
