Edited by: TJVNews.com

On June 25, 2023, Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH), in partnership with the Council of Jewish Organizations of Staten Island (COJO) and the Young Israel of Staten Island (YISI), organized a community health fair focused on cardiological care. Held at the Young Israel of Staten Island in the borough’s Willowbrook section, the event offered free heart and health screenings, along with an information session featuring esteemed guest speaker Dr. Mitchell Weinberg, chair of cardiology at SIUH. Dr. Weinberg, a University of Pennsylvania-trained Cardiologist and Associate Professor at Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra University, has a broad clinical expertise ranging from vascular medicine to pulmonary embolism intervention.

Mendy Mirocznik, President of COJO, expressed gratitude to Rabbi Yaakov Lehrfield and President Robert Rosenberg for generously hosting the health fair at the Young Israel of Staten Island, the borough’s central synagogue and community gathering place. Mirocznik emphasized the invaluable support the Young Israel of Staten Island has provided to the Staten Island community, particularly during the challenging years of the pandemic. He acknowledged the synagogue as an essential institution and extended COJO’s heartfelt appreciation for their continuous commitment to the community.

Mirocznik also extended his thanks to SIUH Chaplain Victor A. Brown and his exceptional hospital team, including Michelle Cho, summer cardiology intern, Mina Ozkan, EKG technician, Jacqueline Torres, health educator, and Claudette Hillel, assistant patient care unit manager, whom COJO regards as their favorite nurse. He commended their excellent work in conducting health screenings and addressing inquiries from attendees. Mirocznik further praised the informative and educational presentation delivered by Dr. Mitchell Weinberg. Mirocznik concluded by acknowledging the presence of Pesach Osina, representing New York City Council Speaker Adriana Adams and thanked him for his support and encouragement.

Chaplain Brown expressed his appreciation to Mendy Mirocznik and Rabbi Yaakov Lehrfield, highlighting the smooth collaboration among all parties involved in organizing the health fair at the Young Israel of Staten Island. He emphasized the unity of purpose shared by everyone involved, focusing on the successful execution of the event and disseminating crucial information to the community. Chaplain Brown commended Mendy Mirocznik and Rabbi Yaakov Lehrfield, expressing excitement about future collaborative ventures between SIUH, COJO, and YISI, stating that they are off to a great start.
