Whole Foods shut down its “flagship” San Francisco location due to rampant crime and drug abuse in the area.
Downtown San Francisco Whole Foods closed down indefinitely because of “deteriorating street conditions around drug use and crime,” the San Francisco Standard reported. The supermarket shut down on Monday, just over a year after opening, according to company officials.
“If we feel we can ensure the safety of our team members in the store, we will evaluate a reopening of our Trinity location,” Whole Foods said in a statement.
The closing of the grocery store, which Whole Foods touted as its “flagship store” when it opened, comes as crime surges in the Democratic city. Last month, a CNN reporter was robbed while interviewing residents about the crime surge in San Francisco. A recent study showed that a San Francisco resident has a 1 in 16 chance of being a victim of property or violent crime.
After teens began circulating instructions for stealing cars via TikTok, California attorney general Rob Bonta (D.) wrote a letter to Kia and Hyundai, blaming the companies’ manufacturing for the car theft epidemic.
