What Role Did George Soros Play in Manhattan DA Bragg’s Decision to Prosecute Trump?
By: Serach Nissim
Allies to former President Donald Trump are claiming that Manhattan district attorney Alvin Bragg, who is threatening Trump with a criminal case, may be under the influence of George Soros, the billionaire Democratic donor.
Mr. Soros, 92, is a mega philanthropist, with a net worth of $8.6 billion as of 2021, having already donated over $32 billion to the Open Society Foundations. As per the NY Times, Soros also donated to a progressive criminal justice group which endorses liberal prosecutors and backs overhauling the criminal justice system. The group, Color of Change, pledged to spend $1 million to support Mr. Bragg in his 2021 campaign and to send out mailers to get voters to show up. As per the Times, Mr. Soros contributed $1 million to the group.
A spokesman for Mr. Soros said that the philanthropist never met Braggs, nor has he ever given money directly to Bragg’s campaign. “George Soros and Alvin Bragg have never met in person or spoken by telephone, email, Zoom, etc.,” said Michael Vachon, a spokesman for Mr. Soros. “There has been no contact between the two.” The rep added that Mr. Soros never hid his support for criminal justice reforms. “I have supported the election (and more recently the re-election) of prosecutors who support reform,” wrote Soros in a 2022 op-ed in the Wall Street Journal. “I have done it transparently, and I have no intention of stopping.”
A spokeswoman for Color of Change said that the group considered several district attorney candidates who would be open to reforms, and that the interview process was done independent of funders. The spokesman added that Bragg was one of many candidates that it supported, and that Soros was one of the group’s many donors. Further, the group said that Soros’s donation that year wasn’t unusual and that Soros has been a steady donor since at least 2016. Also, as per campaign finance website Open Secrets, Color of Change only ended up spending $500,000 on Bragg’s campaign, which amounted to roughly 11% of its annual budget for the 2021/2022 elections.
Despite this, certain Trump allies have been ruminating about an alleged connection between the two men, as a way to explain why Bragg had a seeming change of heart and decided to prosecute against Trump in the case related to hush money paid to Stormy Daniels. “Alvin Bragg received in EXCESS OF ONE MILLION DOLLARS from the Radical Left Enemy of ‘TRUMP,’ George Soros,” Mr. Trump wrote last Monday in a Truth Social post.
Similar sentiments were echoed by his supporters. “Alvin Bragg is bought by George Soros. He allows violent criminals to walk the streets of New York City, but will prosecute the likely Republican nominee (and former president) on a baseless misdemeanor charge. These people are trying to turn America into a third-world country”, Tweeted Senator J.D. Vance (R-OH), on Saturday. “Alvin Bragg is bought and paid for by George Soros and has repeatedly showed his hatred for President Trump based on purely political motives,” tweeted Rep. Anna Paulina Luna
