Orthodox Jewish Man Shot to Death in North Miami Beach; Jewish Residents of Linden, NJ Receive Anti-Semitic Hate Mail

Tragedy struck the North Miami Beach community Motzoei Shabbos, when Hershy Schwartz, a member of Chesed Shel Emes, was killed in what police say appears to be a robbery, according to a report on the Hamodia web site.
Vois Es Nais reported that at the scene of the crime, located near North Miami Avenue and NE 167th Street in North Miami Beach, police discovered 39 year old, Hershy Schwartz U”h B”R Nuchem early Sunday morning at approximately 9 am in his car. The VIN report said that Schwartz’s car had been visibly ransacked.
Schwartz was engaged to be married in less than two weeks to Rosie Brustowsky of Lakewood, New Jersey. She is the daughter of Rabbi Aaron Brustowsky, a noted educator, the Hamodia report indicated.
Preliminary reports say that the shooting was not motivated by anti-Semitism and was a robbery, but police are only beginning to investigate, according to the Hamodia report. There is currently no surveillance footage of the suspect available.
Hershy was the coordinator of Chesed Shel Emes’ Shiva Gemach, which provides chairs, sifrei Torah, and other needs for mourners, Hamodia reported.
In other news, Hamodia also reported that in the town of Linden, New Jersey, Orthodox Jewish residents have filed complaints with local law enforcement agencies concerning the fact that they have been receiving hate mail over the past few weeks, which has become a concern for the Jewish community which has been growing in the city over the years.
“We received letters which say things like ‘We’re not done yet. Hitler was right!’ and other hateful messages, and it is of great concern to the community,” a resident who requested anonymity told Hamodia. “Several such letters were delivered to addresses of Jewish families. Some have contacted the local police, but the response has been sort of weak. It has many of us worried.”
Over the past few years, the city of Linden has seen an influx of Jewish residents who have purchased homes in the neighborhood and constructed an infrastructure for the Jewish community, Hamodia reported. Many Chassidic families from Brooklyn and elsewhere have settled in Linden and created a vibrant community. The recent hate mail that the Jewish residents of the northern New Jersey town (which is close to Rahway) have received has served as evidence that there is a strong anti-Semitic undercurrent in the town and that there are those who oppose Jews settling in the area, according to the Hamodia report.
The Jewish residents of Linden are hoping that local officials will take the threats seriously and work on uprooting any animosity towards them, the report added
