The coronary care unit at Lenox Hill Hospital, a member of Northwell Health, has been awarded a prestigious three-year silver recognition Beacon Award by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses for its exceptional care through improved outcomes and greater overall patient satisfaction. Hospital units that receive this honor not only exemplify excellence in patient care but also a positive and supportive work environment that features high morale, lower turnover, and a collaboration between nurses and hospital leadership.

“This designation demonstrates how nurses, and all team members who impact care on our coronary care unit, work together as a team and exceed excellence standards,” said Launette Woolforde, EdD, DNP, the chief nursing officer of Lenox Hill Hospital. “I am so proud of this exemplary team. Their skill, caring and collaboration transforms the lives of our patients and families.”

The designation is based on a rigorous review process in which a unit demonstrates evidence-based metrics that meet or exceed quality standards based on proven indicators of excellence in five different categories. Scores are based on measurable outcomes achieved by the unit as well as the processes employed to better patient care and create a quality work environment. Silver-level designations demonstrate an effective approach to policies, procedures and processes that included engagement of staff and key stakeholders.

“Congratulations to the remarkable nurses who provide life-saving critical care to patients in our coronary care unit,” said Daniel Baker, MD, the executive director of Lenox Hill Hospital. “This designation is a well-deserved recognition of your hard work.”

The nursing department has received other illustrious industry honors including the coveted Magnet Recognition status. This rare international designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) recognizes commitment to nursing excellence and dedication to the highest quality of patient care. Just 608 hospitals worldwide have achieved Magnet status for nursing excellence since the program’s inception in 1983.

Lenox Hill Hospital’s cardiac care departments have also received multiple honors. U.S. News and World Report rated Lenox Hill’s cardiology and heart surgery department as the 15th best in the nation. Healthgrades placed the hospital at number two for coronary intervention and fifth for cardiology in New York State. The leading marketplace connecting doctors and patients, also awarded the hospital America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Care Award™ for 10 years in a row and America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Coronary Intervention Award™ for 12 years in a row. Newsweek also ranked Lenox Hill among the “World’s Best Specialized Hospitals” for 2023.

Additionally, the cardiothoracic program received three-star ratings – the highest rating – from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons for superior outcomes in two complex heart procedures: isolated coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and isolated mitral valve replacement and repair (MVRR).
