Williamsburg Home Rental Nets $35K a Month; Area Continues to Lead NYC in Popularity

By: Daniella Doria

The New York City rental market has always been crazy and has now hit even bigger records. A house in Brooklyn has just gone on the market for $35,000 a month and has made history as the most expensive rental ever for the Williamsburg neighborhood.

The New York Post reports, from a StreetEasy listing, that the property, known as Casa Powers, the residence, a converted warehouse and loft at 139 Powers St., has six bedrooms and four baths, spanning across some 4,200 square feet. A private backyard spans a massive 2,500 square feet — a rarity in the city. There’s also a private roof.

“The entire home is rooted in comfort and style with huge plush rugs, deep couches and an immense number of cool places to wine, dine and entertain,” the listing says. “It is the perfect place to host friends or tuck in and stay cozy and chill.”

Mary K. Jacob, of The New York Post, writes the prewar unit has been marvelously renovated and features modern amenities with soaring 15-foot ceilings, exposed brick, a custom-built library replete with a sliding ladder, climbing plants and an expansive skylight. Back in Williamsburg, the home’s open kitchen comes complete with a breakfast nook, a mod Smeg refrigerator, open shelving, an industrial sink and a live-edge wooden island lit above by ceiling skylights, the listing says. Above, a mid-level mezzanine comes complete with an additional living room area and an office overlooking the lower level. Other features include a wet bar and an expandable dining table that offers seating for up to 22 people.

This rental is so expensive, the next highest rental, located in Fort Greene, is $7,000 less a month. That rental is a townhouse at 232 Carlton Ave., which features multi-level terraces and a rear yard, according to StreetEasy.

“Casa Powers and its interiors came together organically over time, slowly built out starting from scratch,” Sydney Blumstein, the homeowner, told The Post. “As collectors of old treasures, reclaimed items and unique artifacts, we have assembled many art and design pieces from all over the world.” According to Blumstein, she and her husband decided to put up their longtime and beloved — and not to mention, impeccably decorated — abode up for rent to spend more time outside of the city.

Williamsburg has become the most popular place in the 5 boroughs for nightlife, dining, and culture, leaving the village in NYC in the dust. While tourists flock to Times Square and other areas in the city, where restaurants close at 9- 10PM and the nightlife is limited and a shadow of what it used to be, Brooklyn is on fire.

Williamsburg is a hip neighborhood in Brooklyn that draws the young and the fashionable to its chic boutiques, trendy cafes and buzzy restaurants. Street art brightens residential thoroughfares and repurposed factories, while the waterfront provides stunning views of Manhattan and seasonal venues for outdoor concerts and food markets. Dance clubs, happening bars and music halls liven up the nightlife scene, google editors describe the area.
