Newsweek Ranks Lenox Hill Among World’s Best Hospitals in Three Specialties

Edited by: TJVNews.com

Lenox Hill Hospital has been ranked among the “World’s Best Specialized Hospitals” for 2023 in neurosurgery (28), orthopedics (56), and cardiology (137) by Newsweek, a premier global news magazine. The hospital was recognized not only for expertise in these clinical specialties but also for being a pioneer of scientific development. The magazine emphasized that the list is comprised of international state-of-the-art medical facilities with the most accomplished physicians and clinicians that offer the highest level of patient care.

Newsweek, which partnered with global research firm Statista, based its annual peer-reviewed ratings on the recommendations of over 40,000 medical experts in more than 20 countries, results from patient surveys, and key medical performance indicators. Industry leaders, ranging from doctors to hospital managers, were asked to submit hospital recommendations based on their area of expertise, which were then tabulated and validated by an international board of renowned medical experts. The rankings feature the top 125 hospitals in the fields of neurosurgery and orthopedics and the top 300 hospitals for cardiology.

“I am so proud to once again see our neurosurgery, orthopedics and cardiology departments ranked within Newsweek’s world’s best hospitals list. It confirms what we already know here at Lenox Hill – our patients receive exceptional care from a dedicated staff of world-class clinicians,” said Daniel Baker, MD, executive director of Lenox Hill Hospital. “I congratulate all members of these departments for this prestigious recognition of their hard work and dedication to our patients.”

The three specialties recognized by Newsweek, also received high ratings from U.S. News and World Report for 2022-23. The leading consumer report publication rated Lenox Hill’s cardiology and heart surgery department at 15th best in the nation, orthopedics at 17th, and neurology and neurosurgery at 22nd. In addition, Lenox Hill’s cardiothoracic program received three-star ratings from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons for superior outcomes in two complex heart procedures: isolated coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and isolated mitral valve replacement and repair (MVRR).

Healthgrades recognized Lenox Hill as one of 100 best hospitals in the U.S. for cardiac care and coronary intervention. The online health resource also placed the medical center within the top 1% of hospitals in the nation for clinical care quality and within the top 5% of all U.S. hospitals for patient safety for 2022. The hospital also received five-star distinctions for coronary bypass surgery, coronary intervention procedures, treatment of heart failure, transurethral prostate resection surgery, appendectomy, and treatment of sepsis.

In other Lenox Hill related news, this week it was reported that Lenox Hill Hospital unveiled an 8,000-square-foot Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit (ICU) dedicated to treating the most critically ill neurosurgery and neurology patients. The unit will care for post-operative, as well as complex neurological and neurosurgical patients, including those with arteriovenous malformations, aneurysms, strokes, tumors, and complex spinal disease. It will be staffed by neuro-intensive care physicians, physician assistants, advanced practice nurses, critical care registered nurses, neuro-rehab therapists and a highly skilled team of other healthcare professionals who will provide 24/7 specialized, patient-centered care with the goal of maximizing positive outcomes leading to neurological recovery and minimizing neurological disability.

“This celebration is not only about the inauguration of the Neuroscience ICU at Lenox Hill Hospital but also marks our renewed commitment to providing excellence in neurological care to our community. It is a testament to our trajectory of growth and success,” said Souhel Najjar, MD, chair of neurology at Lenox Hill Hospital and senior vice president and executive director of neurology for Northwell Health.

The ICU, which is housed in a revitalized, dedicated space on the eighth floor of the hospital, consists of 12 private single-patient rooms and a spacious waiting area. It provides direct access to advanced imaging modalities with expedited results, as well as to highly-trained staff offering personalized care.

“We have established a world class neuroscience team at Lenox Hill Hospital and this unit reflects the efforts and talent that have been assembled here over the past 10 years,” said David Langer, MD, chair of neurosurgery at Lenox Hill Hospital and vice president of neurosurgery for Northwell’s Western Region. “Eight months ago, I was hospitalized at Lenox Hill for a serious spinal cord injury. I received world-class neurosurgical care from our team, which helped me return to work stronger than before in large part due to the nursing care I received here This experience reaffirmed my drive to have a dedicated space where severely ill neurological patients can receive care from our incredible team.”

Lenox Hill Hospital’s neurology and neurosurgery departments are held in high esteem for their excellence in care. They both rank number 22 on the U.S. News & World Report’s 2022-23 Best Hospitals list. Neurosurgery is also number 28 on Newsweek’s 2022 World’s Best Specialized Hospitals list for the second consecutive year. The hospital’s Stroke Center, which is part of the neurology department, has collected several illustrious distinctions, including certification as a Comprehensive Stroke Center by the Joint Commission, earning the organization’s coveted Gold Seal of Approval. Lenox Hill has also earned the American Heart/American Stroke Association Get With The Guidelines® — Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award. In addition, the hospital is ranked third in New York City for best-value outcomes for spine surgery, according to Becker’s Spine Review. Lenox Hill Hospital is Magnet® designated, earning this top honor from the American Nurses Credentialing Center for its commitment to excellence and dedication to the highest quality patient care. Only about 500 hospitals worldwide have achieved this prestigious designation since the program’s inception in 1983.
