Unity Healthy Eating-Food Distribution Done in Togetherness with Project Hospitality, El Centro Del Inmigrante & Council of Jewish Organizations

On July 26, 2022, in the Port Richmond section of Staten Island, perhaps a first for the pantry world Project Hospitality, El Centro Del Inmigrante and Council of Jewish Organizations teamed up to hold a unity healthy food distribution. “The goal of this important food distribution is to educate and encourage healthy eating among our pantry consumers,” remarked Gary Tai, Community Relations & Field Marketing – Empire BlueCross BlueShield HealthPlus. “At Empire we are proud of the great work done by Project Hospitality, El Centro Del Inmigrante and Council of Jewish Organizations in combatting food insecurity and their ability to mobilize and to assist as many Staten Islanders as possible. Today, our objective is to work on education that will helpfully be beneficial to the pantry consumer. By adopting healthier eating habits, we can prevent illness and disease. That is why Empire BlueCross BlueShield HealthPlus is so happy, proud and honored to partner with this healthy food distribution and we look forward to continuing to engage the community with wonderful healthy programs that will enhance the health of Staten Islanders.”
Carina Vizhnay, Events Coordinator & Community Relations Representative Empire BlueCross BlueShield HealthPlus remarked, “I have had the privilege and honor of working hand in hand with Project Hospitality, El Centro Del Inmigrante and Council of Jewish Organizations throughout the course of the pandemic and have witnessed first-hand Rev. Terry Troia, president, Project Hospitality, Gloria Novoa, director of volunteers, Project Hospitality, Andres Garcia, executive director of El Centro Del Inmigrante, Mendy Mirocznik, president, COJO and Iva Tull Reuven, Service Committee chairperson, COJO in action. These poverty warriors would do everything in their power to help as many people they can touch as best as they can. Having a great track record of success, I decided to suggest this healthy eating-food distribution which found much approval with this important gang of poverty warriors. The enthusiastic acceptance by the team and how they embraced it so lovingly demonstrates their commitment in not only providing for others, but caring about the physical health of other and concern for their well-being. This is admirable and praiseworthy public service at the finest and their exemplary commitment to the public is in harmony with our mission in seeking a healthier world for all people.
Mendy Mirocznik, president of COJO, thanked Carina Vizhnay as being “a great volunteer member of the COO Service Committee” and for suggesting “this unique unity healthy food distribution especially since it was done in collaboration with our community partners Project Hospitality, El Centro Del Inmigrante and the NYPD.”
“What I witness today is more than a healthy food distribution helping to teach healthier eating habits, I see it as the diverse Staten Island community coming together from all walks of life as one with the goal of making life better for as many people we can touch, “ Rabbi Mirocznik said.
He added: “Yes, today is important and if not for Terry Troia, Andreas Garcia, Gloria Novoa and Iva Tull Reuven there would be no healthy food distribution. What I see here today is the community coalescing together in friendship, love and unity and focusing on how special we are individually and how beautiful it is for us to work together blending ourselves as people dedicated to caring for people from all walks of life. I see here people making friendships with new people and using productive ideas as healthier eating as a vehicle in doing so. I see people sharing creative cooking ideas and cultures coming alive in a caring and sharing way.
I dare say this, thank you Rev. Troia the venerable peoples advocate who never takes no for an answer and who always seeks to bring the best out of people and to further unite people in friendship as one. Terry, on an organizational and personal level COJO, myself and our members cannot thank you enough. Please keep up your strong positive spirit, flame and energy your dream is becoming the new reality that is need as the world hopefully transition to a post Covid world full of hope and optimism.
I also want to thank the NYPD, Chief Gin Yee, Staten Island Borough Commander, Captain Eric Waldhelm, commanding officer, Pct. 121, Officer Daniel Murro, Youth Coordinating Officer, Pct. 121, Officer Scott Gusenfitter, Community Affairs, Pct. 121; and Officer John Sibal, Community Affairs, Pct. 121 for once again lending a hand and being there for the community. Captain Waldhelm and the officer of his command proudly lead by example. By enthusiastically participating in this historic healthy food distribution, they continue to forge ahead in building confidence and friendship and winning community trust.
We need more officers such as Chief Yee, Captain Waldhelm and the officers assigned to our great Borough, these officers are the epitome of public service who truly care about the people they proudly serve. Thanks to the hard work, dedication, blood sweat and tears and diligent efforts of Chief Yee and Captain Waldhelm the quality of life and public safety of Staten Island is in a good place. On behalf of COJO we thank you.”
Captain Waldhelm commented, “I thank Project Hospitality, El Centro Del Inmigrante and COJO for inviting the NYPD to participate as a community partner. The good this trinal does for Staten Island is legendary. I thank Mendy Mirocznik for pursuing this relationship and his willing partners Rev. Terry Troia, Andres Garcia, Gloria Novoa and Iva Tull Reuven for their warm embrace. It is through this friendship we have open lines of communication and from a policing perspective these positive interactions have afforded us the opportunity to better communicate and take public safety to an entire new level. She thanked Costco Staten Island, City Harvest, Heritage Farm at Snug Harbor, Staten Island, and the great volunteers especially the 26-person mission that came from Emmanuel Reformed Church from Springfield, South Dakota under the care Danielle Wallinga. “This distribution gathered people together from across the United States with the objective of sharing, loving and with prayers to help make this world a better place for all people. In a special way, their dream is reality.”
