If the streets of the Big Apple were not congested enough, it appears that in addition to passenger cars, Ubers, commercial vehicles, bicycles and scooters, New Yorkers have witnessed a significant uptick in dirt bikes.

Because these conveyances are not street-legal in the city and due to the fact that many find them quite menacing to the safety of pedestrians, on Tuesday, New York City Mayor Eric Adams along with city officials staged a massive crushing of 92 of the seized bikes.

In March of this year, the New York Post reported that a Manhattan man who was beaten by a mob of dirt bikers — along with his father — said that the wild, caught-on-video brawl was sparked by a mere “accident.”

The dirt bikes were destroyed with the use of a bulldozer at the Erie Basin Auto Pound off Gowanus Bay in Brooklyn, according to the Post report.

In this campaign to eradicate unauthorized recreational machines from the streets of New York, Adams said at a press conference that, “the NYPD heard the call, and they did a Herculean task to get rid of these loud, intimidating and dangerous and illegal dirt bikes and ATVs that are on our streets. For years, we’ve witnessed what happens when they go under control or we do not enforce. They continue to grow over and over and over again. And I’m not going to give up on my promise and commitments to rid our streets of these bikes and make all of our boroughs a place where people can move about. As you can see from the number of bikes here today, we are making good on our promise.”

On Tuesday, Adams added: “Today, as we stand in the shadow of the Freedom Tower, we are freeing ourselves from these destructive pieces of machinery that’s on our streets. They will be crushed today so they can never terrorize our city again, each and every one of them. They will be turned into scrap metal and eventually recycled.”

The number of the illegal dirt bikes on the streets of New York has increased significantly and Adams told the crowd assembled that the NYPD have seized approximately 900 illegal dirt bikes and ATVs so far this year. He said it was an 88% increase over last year.

The dirt bikes were not resold because Adams wanted to ensure that they don’t make their way back to the streets of the city due to the danger they represent and the general havoc that they cause.
