NEW YORK, NY – Northwell Health has named Brett Miles, MD, DDS, FACS, chair of otolaryngology and head & neck surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital and Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital, as well as vice president of otolaryngology for the health system’s Western Region, which includes Manhattan, Staten Island and Westchester County. Dr. Miles will oversee the full spectrum of operations for otolaryngology services, including strategic direction, clinical operations, patient care quality, research trials, academic initiatives, and business development. He will also continue serving as the surgical lead of the head & neck disease management team in the Northwell Health Cancer Institute and as a professor at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.
Dr. Miles, a renowned expert in the areas of head and neck oncology, microvascular reconstructive surgery, and robotic surgery, joined Northwell Health in 2021 as the vice chair of otolaryngology at Long Island Jewish Medical Center (LIJMC). He also oversaw otolaryngology services in Westchester and Staten Island. In that short time, Dr. Miles successfully launched the head and neck Enhanced Recovery Program for major surgery across the health system, obtained approval for the oral cavity tissue collection collaboration between Northwell Biorepository and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and launched the Otolaryngology Microsurgery Skill Lab for LIJMC residents.
Before joining Northwell, Dr. Miles spent 11 years at Mount Sinai Health System, where he served as co-chief of the division of head and neck cancer surgery in the department of otolaryngology for the last seven years of his tenure there. He was also director of the Head and Neck Oncology-Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship Program, vice chair of clinical research, and professor of otolaryngology at the Icahn School of Medicine. For his dedication to teaching and mentorship of fellows, residents, and medical students, Dr. Miles was twice named faculty of the year.
In addition to his medical and academic pursuits, Dr. Miles has been the principal investigator and co-investigator in numerous National Institutes of Health-funded studies and interventional clinical trials related to head and neck oncology, and robotic and reconstructive surgery.
As a leading authority in his field, Dr. Miles has been invited to lecture both nationally and internationally and has published extensively in peer-reviewed literature. He has given over 120 presentations across the globe, made 170 original contributions to numerous clinical publications and has written more than 30 book chapters. He is a member of several elite medical organizations, where he holds prominent roles, including a position on the executive council of the New York Head and Neck Society.
After completing a bachelor’s degree at Boise State University, Dr. Miles earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and his doctorate of dental surgery from Creighton University. He completed residencies in oral and maxillofacial surgery, and otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He received fellowship training in head and neck oncology at Toronto General Hospital. Dr. Miles is dually board certified in oral and maxillofacial surgery, and otolaryngology-head and neck surgery.
