An oversized Brooklyn townhouse, built in the 19th century by a sea captain, has hit the market.
As reported by the NY Post, the Brooklyn Heights home, known as the Captain’s House, is asking $9.99 million. The home, at 13 Cranberry St., boasts five bedrooms and three and a half baths. The three-story, 4,900-square-foot home is situated just steps from the desirable Brooklyn Promenade.
The 25-foot-wide house was built in 1829 by Richard Mortimer, a British sea captain. It was recently renovated by Baxt Ingui Architects, who “spared no expense undergoing the painstaking process to beautifully restore the historic details and marry them with modern upgrades that support today’s lifestyle”, says the real estate listing. Design details include crown moldings with intricate fruit patterns, two fireplaces, 11-foot ceilings, plenty of storage space and the original two-centuries-old staircase. The home also boasts heated floors inside, and even a heated stoop and sidewalk outside.
The sun-filled house boasts a chef’s kitchen with white cabinets, white marble counters and top of the line appliances. The garden level also has a home gym and a sauna. The second floor has the master suite, with a fireplace and spa-like bathroom with a soaking tub, two dressing rooms and a “bonus” room that may be used as a nursey, home office, sitting room or another bedroom. The next floor has two more bedrooms with fireplaces and large closets, and a laundry room. The top floor attic has another room which can be used as a bedroom, office or lounge. The home also has a private outdoor patio area with tiles. As per an old British tradition, there is also a secret cavity, where Capt. Mortimer allegedly hid the home’s deed some 200 years ago, concealing the hole with a decorative wax seal.
The home is being listed by broker Tyler Whitman of Triplemint Real Estate, who is also the star of “Million Dollar Listing New York”, the Bravo reality-television hit show now running its 9th season.
The home was last listed for sale asking $11,500,000 in 2021, which preceded another attempted list for $12,995,000 earlier in 2021, as per Street Easy. Property taxes for the home are about $22,480 per year, as per Zillow.
