Northwell Health’s flagship Manhattan hospital is among top 1% of all U.S. hospitals

Lenox Hill Hospital is among America’s 50 Best Hospitals in 2022 according to Healthgrades, the leading resource that connects consumers, physicians and health systems. This recognition places Lenox Hill among the top one percent of all hospitals in the country for its high quality of clinical care and positive patient outcomes for the most common conditions and procedures. It is the only hospital in New York City to receive this honor in 2022.
Patients of the top 50 hospitals receive a better level of care and are more likely to experience successful outcomes. From 2018 to 2020, patients treated at one of these hospitals on average had a 21.7 percent lower risk of dying when compared to patients treated at hospitals that did not receive the award, as measured across 17 rated conditions and procedures where mortality is the outcome. In fact, if all U.S. hospitals as a group performed similarly to the 50 best hospitals, 157,292 lives could potentially have been saved from 2018 to 2020.*
In order to become eligible for America’s 50 Best Hospitals Award, a hospital must place within the top 5% of medical centers in the nation for a number of years. Prior to this year’s distinction, Healthgrades had placed Lenox Hill among the 100 best hospitals in the nation for five consecutive years.
”We are extremely honored to be once again recognized by Healthgrades as one of the best hospitals in the country – and this year, the only hospital in New York City to be among America’s 50 Best ,” said Mark Schiffer, MD, executive director of Lenox Hill Hospital. “This award underscores our team members’ ongoing commitment to providing a superior level of patient care and achieving exceptional clinical outcomes.”
In addition to this achievement, Healthgrades has designated Lenox Hill as one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for cardiac care, coronary intervention and prostate surgery:
- The America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Care Award™ for 9 years in a row (2014-2022). Lenox Hill is the only hospital in New York State to receive this award for 9 consecutive years.
- The America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Coronary Intervention Award™ for 11 years in a row (2012-2022).
- The America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Prostate Surgeries Award™ for 7 years in a row (2016-2022).
- Five-Star Distinctions for coronary bypass surgery, coronary intervention procedures, treatment of heart failure, transurethral prostate resection surgery, appendectomy, and treatment of sepsis.
“Being among America’s 50 Best Hospitals is the top achievement from Healthgrades,” said Brad Bowman, MD, chief medical officer and head of data science at Healthgrades. “Hospitals like Lenox Hill Hospital are truly leading the nation and setting the standard for care delivery. We commend Lenox Hill Hospital for their dedication to patient care and committing themselves to keeping their communities safe.”
For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated Medicare inpatient records from about 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide. To assess overall hospital performance, the organization reviewed outcomes across more than 31 of the most common procedures and conditions. Healthgrades is committed to delivering the most scientifically accurate and comprehensive information about doctors and hospitals to help consumers find the highest quality of care. With data insights not available anywhere else, the recipients of America’s 50 Best Hospitals award have consistently delivered better than expected outcomes for their patients.
As Northwell Health’s flagship hospital in Manhattan, Lenox Hill Hospital has delivered world-class clinical care for more than 160 years and currently treats more than 163,000 patients annually. Northwell has invested more than $200 million in capital improvements since Lenox Hill joined the 23-hospital health system in 2010. To honor its commitment to delivering premier clinical care, Lenox Hill has made major investments in recruiting nationally renowned physicians and enhancing its clinical programs. In addition, Northwell is planning a major revitalization of Lenox Hill to be prepared to efficiently deliver the next generation of care and effectively adapt to the changes in modern medicine.
In addition to the recognition by Healthgrades, Lenox Hill was rated by U.S. News and World Report as the fourth-ranked medical center in New York State and received top-50 national ratings in seven medical specialties: neurology and neurosurgery (23rd best in the nation), orthopedics (25th), ear, nose and throat (27th), cardiology and heart surgery (28th), gynecology (31st), diabetes and endocrinology (38th) and geriatrics (39th).
