Edited by: TJVNews.com As the crime rate in New York City soars, on Thursday, it was reported that the NYPD are investigating a case of a man who absconded in an East New York unoccupied school bus and hit anywhere from 15-20 vehicles before he was stopped by authorities, according to an abc7ny.com report.
At about 3 pm on Thursday afternoon, Anthony Reyes, 43, stole the bus at East 51st Street between Linden Boulevard and Lenox Road in the East Flatbush section of Brooklyn. The school bus had the name “Hoyt Transportation” on the side, according to an nbcnewyork.com report.
Reyes was taken into custody in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn at Jamaica and Sheffield Avenues after law enforcement tracked the stolen bus through many police precincts, as was reported by abc7ny.com.
Reyes was later charged with “grand larceny, reckless endangerment, unauthorized use of a vehicle, forgery, criminal possession of stolen property, obstruction of a governmental authority, resisting arrest, leaving the scene of an accident and fleeing an officer in a motor vehicle, “ according to the abc7ny.com report.
The suspect hit a number of vehicles on his wild trajectory in addition to an East New York Avenue building, as was reported by abc7ny.com. The number of cars and extent of damage they sustained is currently unclear, according to the nbcnewyork.com web site.
After the bus hit the building in East New York it came to a stop, however, nbcnewyork.com reported that the suspect allegedly fled again, striking yet another vehicle heading eastbound on Atlantic Avenue. EMS responded to this scene and removed the motorist that was struck on Atlantic Avenue to an area hospital for minor injuries.
The nbcnewyork.com report indicated that the bus again fled after the Atlantic Avenue crash and came to rest in the vicinity of Georgia Avenue and Sheffield Avenue, where Reyes was taken into custody, police said.
Police attempted to taser Reyes but he was only struck with one prong. He was taken to an area hospital, according to the abc7ny.com report. One officer suffered a minor hand injury and three other people reported minor injuries.
One witness who spoke with abc7ny.com said the suspect struck every single car on a block.
“One of those cars that was right here, there was a lady inside, and if that cop did not take that lady out, she would’ve been dead by that time,” witness Ali Sulimanalmaweri said. “So he pulled her out and he hit the car again, he kept hitting the car so he could run away.”
No children were on the bus. Video from the scene shows the bus with significant front-end damage as debris was scattered throughout the street, according to the nbcnewyork.com report.
Police say Reyes has at least 12 prior arrests, including robbery, as was reported
by abc7ny.com. His last arrest for robbery was in 2017. He was released in March 2020 and is currently on parole until March 2025.
