Congressman Jerry Nadler who has represented constituents on Manhattan’s Upper West Side and parts of Brooklyn in the House of Representatives since 1992, is now considering retirement upon reaching his 30th year as a public official.
YWN has reported that Nadler is entertaining the notion of not running for re-election when his current term concludes next year.
Since 2019, Nadler, 74, has been the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and as such wields the kind of power that most politicians hope for.
The YWN report indicated that with advancing age and being beset with health issues, Nadler has given second thoughts to running for yet another term in the House.
The report indicated that in 2002, Nadler underwent bariatric surgery in order to combat his struggles with obesity. Because of his weight issue, he was no longer able to use the New York City subways. At a 2019 press conference in New York City, Nadler fell ill and was hospitalized.
In 2015, Nadler became the lone Jewish Democrat from New York to endorse former President Obama’s nuke deal with Iran that lifted economic sanctions in exchange for Iran’s taking steps to abandon a path to nuclear arms.
His decision attracted those who opposed the deal both in the US and Israel. The YWN report even indicated that some accused him of betraying his alleged support for Israel.
Nadler said his position on the Iran deal was a wrenching decision, putting him at odds with constituents who fear for Israel’s security. While he called the deal an imperfect option, he said he believed it was the best chance for averting a nuclear-armed Iran.
“What helps Israel and averts another potential Holocaust is whatever is most likely to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear bomb,” Nadler said at the time. “My conclusion is that this deal — of the available alternatives to us, not what might or should have been — is the best.”
In May of 2018, Nadler released the following statement in response to President Trump’s decision to withdrawn from the Iran nuclear deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action:
“President Trump presented no coherent argument or factual reason to justify his withdrawal of the United States from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) negotiated by the P5+1. The President acted to satisfy his own personal political interest, motivated by vindictive stubbornness rather than by any imminent national security reasoning, and, as a result, has placed our country, our allies, and the entire world at greater jeopardy, with Iran now more likely to pursue a nuclear weapon. In fact, the President’s decision leaves us further from stopping Iran’s nuclear ambitions or countering its illicit conduct.
“When I voted in support of the JCPOA in 2015, I did so based on the judgment that Iran with a nuclear weapon represented an existential threat, that a non-nuclear armed Iran was better than a nuclear armed Iran, and that the agreement would put us in a better position to prevent Iran’s development of a nuclear bomb going forward. At the time, I also acknowledged the deal’s shortcomings, including the sunset of certain provisions and the fact that we would still need to address Iran’s ballistic missile program and destabilizing regional behavior. But as I stated then, and continue to believe today, the ability to severely restrain Iran’s nuclear program outweighed the JCPOA’s limitations.”
