David Hirsch, MD, DDS, FACS, has been named chair of the newly established department of oral and maxillofacial surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital. He will continue to serve as senior vice president of the dental medicine service line at Northwell Health, a position he was promoted to last year. As chair, Dr. Hirsch will lead the strategic expansion and programmatic growth of the department through clinical, academic and research services.
Dr. Hirsch joined Lenox Hill Hospital in 2016 after a nearly decade-long tenure as director of Bellevue Hospital Center’s department of oral and maxillofacial surgery. He was also an associate professor of surgery at the NYU School of Medicine and NYU College of Dentistry.
A pioneer in the field of jaw reconstruction and virtual surgical planning, Dr. Hirsch is renowned for having developed and patented the revolutionary “Jaw-in-a-Day” procedure. The treatment, specifically designed for patients with jawbone tumors, previously required three surgeries over the course of a year. Dr. Hirsch’s technique involves tumor removal, jaw reconstruction and dental restoration all within a single surgical session. Every step of the operation is virtually planned to achieve optimal results. The first such procedure in the US was performed in 2011 by a surgical team under Dr. Hirsch’s leadership on a patient with a rapid-growing tumor in her lower jaw.
Dr. Hirsch is also actively involved in expanding his Jaw-in-a-Day program to Northwell’s Long Island Jewish Medical Center. In addition, he has been a driving force behind the strategic growth of the health system’s dental medicine practices. Earlier this year, Northwell Health announced the reopening of its Glen Cove practice, which underwent extensive renovations featuring state-of-the-art technology to protect against potential COVID-19 transmission.
An internationally recognized expert in his field, Dr. Hirsch has authored multiple textbook chapters and peer-reviewed papers on orthognathic surgery and skeletal reconstruction of the face. He has traveled internationally for philanthropic and training purposes, performing pro bono work in Mexico, India, and the Dominican Republic. He currently serves as a medical advisory board member for NextGenFace, a non-profit organization that provides free surgery for children with craniofacial abnormalities.
Dr. Hirsch earned his undergraduate degree from Cornell University, where in addition to graduating with honors, he was a NCAA Division I champion wrestler. He went on to attend NYU College of Dentistry and subsequently NYU School of Medicine, which he graduated at the top of his class. Dr. Hirsch supplemented his medical training with an internship in general surgery at NYU, a six-year oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at Bellevue/NYU, and a head and neck surgical oncology fellowship at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center and Providence Hospital in Portland, OR.
