Lenox Hill Hospital Ranked Among Nation’s Best for 2021-22 by U.S. News & World Report

Edited by: TJVNews.com

Lenox Hill Hospital has been ranked among the nation’s top-50 hospitals in seven medical specialties in U.S. News & World Report’s 2021-22 Best Hospitals edition released on Tuesday. The specialties include neurology and neurosurgery (23), orthopedics (25), ear, nose and throat (27), cardiology and heart surgery (28), gynecology (31), diabetes and endocrinology (38), and geriatrics (39). U.S. News also designated Lenox Hill as the fourth-ranked hospital in the New York metropolitan area and the entire state.

In addition to its national rankings, Lenox Hill received a total of four “high performing” designations in the areas of cancer, gastroenterology and GI surgery, pulmonology and lung surgery, and urology. The hospital was also given “high performing” status for the following 13 common procedures and conditions: colon cancer surgery, lung cancer surgery, heart failure, heart bypass surgery, transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), heart attack, diabetes, kidney failure, stroke, knee replacement, hip replacement, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and pneumonia.

“Lenox Hill’s impressive ranking as one of the best hospitals in the country highlights our team’s ongoing commitment to providing exceptional, patient-centric care and achieving superior outcomes,” said Mark Schiffer, MD, executive director of Lenox Hill Hospital. “As our doctors, nurses and staff have demonstrated throughout the arduous year and a half of this devastating pandemic, our top priority is keeping our community healthy and safe.”

Lenox Hill joins three other Northwell Health facilities – North Shore University Hospital (NSUH), Long Island Jewish Medical Center (LIJ) and Huntington Hospital – in achieving top-50 ratings. NSUH and LIJ, along with Lenox Hill, rate among the top seven hospitals in New York. In addition, in a separate U.S. News survey on the nation’s best children’s hospitals released last month, Northwell’s Cohen Children’s Medical Center was ranked number one in New York State and earned top-50 national rankings for exceptional care in nine pediatric specialties. It has been ranked among the nation’s top children’s hospitals by U.S. News for 15 consecutive years.

The rankings come in the wake of the coronavirus health crisis, which hit New York State particularly hard. Northwell treated more Covid-19 patients than any other health system in the nation and saved countless lives. Besides treating gravely ill patients, the health system took initiative to provide diagnostic testing, administer vaccines, and extend a helping hand to underserved populations throughout New York City, Long Island and Westchester.

This marks the 32nd edition of U.S. News’ Best Hospitals rankings, which recognizes hospitals that excel in treating the most challenging patients. This year, U.S. News evaluated 5,000 medical centers nationwide in 15 specialties, procedures and conditions. Only 175 hospitals were ranked in at least one specialty. Its methodologies in most areas of care are based largely on objective measures, such as risk-adjusted survival and discharge-to-home rates, volume, and quality of nursing, among other care-related indicators. The specialty rankings and data were produced by U.S. News with RTI International, a leading research organization.
