As he celebrated his 60th birthday at Gracie Mansion with family, it appears that Mayor DeBlasio had some unexpected well wishers come calling.
As was reported by the Post, a group of Italian-American leaders representing the city along with Republican candidate for mayor and Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa showed up to hand the mayor his birthday cake. No cherry on the top for hizzoner this year or any flowers made of icing, but rather the custom dessert was topped with a meatball weighing 10 lbs.
The significance?? According to Sliwa and his cohorts, the mayor is the “biggest meatball in New York City.”
According to the Post, the beef between the Italian-American leaders from the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn (which is a traditional home for Italian bakeries and assorted eateries) stemmed from the city’s schools cancelling Columbus Day and they assign blame to DeBlasio for it.
Last week, DeBlasio (who has Italian ancestry) said that the NYC Schools Chancellor Meisha Ross Porter and himself were surprised when the city’s Department of Education decided at the last moment to nix Columbus Day in favor of something called Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
Statues of Christopher Columbus and his legacy have been besmirched by cancel culture warriors who believe that Columbus was a racist and slave owner.
Outside of Gracie Mansion, Sliwa said, “We are outraged that De Blasio is claiming he had no knowledge of it and is blaming it on former DOE chief Richard Carranza. Since de Blasio’s been in office he’s been plotting to get rid of all the Christopher Columbus statues in the city. He wants to wipe Columbus off the history books.”
Claiming that he has no objection to celebrations surrounding an Indigenous Peoples’ Day, Sliwa said that DeBlasio is “vilifying” Italian-Americans, according to the Post report. The Guardian Angels founder referenced a 2019 incident when the DeBlasio’s wife, Chirlane McCray gave a thumbs down to a statue of Mother Cabrini in Manhattan. Her decision was overruled by New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo who then decided to unveil a monument to the Italian saint.
Sliwa concluded that hizzoner is dismissing such long time ethnic groups in New York City because he is trying to “prove himself to people like AOC who talk about white privilege. What’s next? Renaming LaGuardia?”
On a lighter note, Sliwa said that he got the chopped meat for the meatball that was placed on the birthday cake for the mayor at Gristede’s.
The Post reported that when reached by the Post at the Yankee game Saturday, DeBlasio spokesman Bill Neidhardt said only, “Curtis Sliwa? Is he even relevant?”
