Now that the 2021 Golden Globe nominations have been announced, the concern now turns to a possible drop in the ratings due to movie audiences being forced to stay home during the coronavirus and the uptick in productions from live streaming services.
What causes a disinterest in tuning into the Golden Globes is that this year there are a bevy of nominees whose names don’t ring a bell at all with the movie going public and they haven’t been seen in the performances that they have been nominated for.
Each year, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association presents the awards. As is their custom, they chose big stars to honor as well as a broad range of international talent, according to a CNN report. CNN also reported that some movies being nominated have not premiered yet or were only viewed for a short time before leaving movie screens.
Because of the pandemic and movie theaters being shuttered, box office hits essentially do not exist this year. Replacing them are companies like Netflix and Amazon who enthusiastically provided content to fill the void for movie goers. CNN reported that new streaming services have also captured segments of the audience seeking entertainment through movies.
In the pre-coronavirus era, those who enjoyed watching movies on the big screen in theaters were often resistant to subscribing to Netflix but after close to a year without taking in new movies in theaters, they have relented and joined the movie service.
The CNN report indicated that Netflix received 22 nominations in film categories and 20 nominations in television productions.
According to the CNN report, “Netflix landed three of the nominations for best drama and musical or comedy, as Disney+, Amazon and Hulu brought the streaming total to six out of 10. In television, streamers accounted for 34 of 55 Globe bids, with only one nomination for a traditional broadcast network, for Jane Levy in “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” on the Globes’ host network, NBC.”
Additional nominations will come with this week’s Screen Actors Guild Awards, in a year that has seen the jumbled award calendar expanded into 2021, and the Oscars — traditionally the cherry on top — pushed back until April, according to the CNN report.
Disclosing the nominees for the 78th annual Golden Globe award were actress Sarah Jessica Parker, six-time Golden Globe winner, and Taraji P. Henson, Golden Globe winner.
The Golden Globes will take place on February 28, coast to coast from 5 pm to 8 pm PT/8-11 ET on NBC. The event will be hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, returning for the fourth time, after hosting in 2013, 2014, and 2015. Fey and Poehler will share duties from their respective cities, with Fey on the East Coast and Poehler on the West Coast. Fey will be live from New York’s Rainbow Room, Poehler will be live from the Beverly Hilton, in Beverly Hills, and nominees, from various locations around the world.
In addition to the categories announced this past week, the 2021 Golden Globes will honor Jane Fonda with the Cecil B. deMille Award, and Norman Lear with the Carol Burnett Award. Lear will be the third recipient of the recently created Carol Burnett Award, which honors contributions to television.
As previously announced, Satchel and Jackson Lee, children of filmmaker and three-time Golden Globe nominee Spike Lee and producer and philanthropist Tonya Lewis Lee, will serve as the 2021 Golden Globe Ambassadors.
Produced by dick clark productions in association with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the Golden Globe Awards are viewed in more than 210 territories worldwide.
