NY Congresswomen Slam Nancy Pelosi’s New House Gender Rules

By Ilana Siyance

In a sign that it’s not yet the whole world who has gone over the edge, Nancy Pelosi’s proposed gender rules gained ridicule from prominent Republican female elected officials.

As reported by the NY Post, the progressive rules of the House of Representatives proposed by Pelosi would “honor all gender identities” by abolishing specific terms like mother and father, son and daughter, and aunt and uncle, and replacing them with only gender-neutral terms such as “parent,” “child,” “sibling” and “parent’s sibling” in all the text of the House rules.

Upstate Congresswoman Elise Stefanik spoke out to say, “Instead of reviving the economy, restoring our Constitutional freedoms and delivering results for the American people, Speaker Pelosi has chosen her debut legislation — which would ban words like mother, sister and daughter,” Stefanik told The Post. “Obviously she is triggered by the historic number of GOP women elected to Congress who will fire Nancy Pelosi once and for all in 2022.”

Newly elected Nicole Malliotakis, who will represent Staten Island and parts of Brooklyn in NY’s 11th congressional district also shared criticism. “There are millions of Americans suffering, our economy is hurting, vaccine distribution is lagging and Nancy Pelosi and the House Democrats are worried about this nonsense,” Malliotakis said. “Here’s a gender neutral word to describe this legislation: ridiculous.”

The proposed changes got coverage in the Georgia Senate runoff as well, where Republican candidate Kelly Loeffler said these were things she would stand up against if elected. “The far-left’s priorities, everyone. If you’d like to still be able to call yourself a father, daughter, mother or son, vote for me and @Perduesenate on Tuesday,” Loeffler tweeted Saturday, adding, “Sincerely, A Proud Daughter.”

As per the Post, top Democrats continuing to tout themselves for the new rules, with Pelosi calling them “the most inclusive in history.” Representative from Massachusetts, Jim McGovern, also took credit, tweeting, “I’m proud to start the 117th Congress by drafting these historic rules changes.” Progressive Queens/Bronx Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, was also elated by the proposals, and tweeted that she was “grateful for@RepMcGovern’s leadership”.

Congress is expected to vote on the new rules on Monday, when the house reconvenes along with a 45-page rules package, which also includes other topics such as the coronavirus pandemic and requiring lawmakers to identify new revenue sources. “These future-focused proposals reflect our priorities as a caucus and as a country — including crushing the coronavirus, addressing economic disparity, combating the climate crisis, advancing inclusion, and promoting integrity in government.”
