Although the year 2020 is soon to become history, its pages will not be collecting dust. They will be re-written, re-read and discussed for hundreds of years….if there is any humanity left to ponder the past. Not to depress our up-to-date, knowledgeable, aware readers with further gloom, we’ll focus on and draw the smiley face on the good things; for instance, the story of the Abraham Accords, signed, sealed and delivered this past year. Generations of peace-focused Jews, Arabs, Christians and especially Israelis have prayed for this miraculous moment since the creation of the modern Israel in 1948.
Back on September 15th, the long, whispered about Abraham Accords, brokered by the United States, ordered by President Trump and coordinated by Jared Kushner were declared and signed by Israel, The United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and the U.S. It was a treaty of peace, with full diplomatic relations between The State of Israel and these former hostile nations.
The earlier peace agreements Israel had with Jordan and Egypt were always considered fragile but on Sept. 15th, they gained the strength to start the chain of peace agreements to be linked by Sudan and recently, far off Morocco. Arabia, hopefully is soon to follow. With these major, wealthy and influential partners inking their good intentions with Israel, the Palestinian Authority may soon be forced to follow. For Israelis, 2020 will stand alongside of 1948 as their most glorious and memorable years. May there be more to come.
The other good news is that Israel, by the time you read this piece, will have inoculated over one million of its citizens with the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine. They’ve been doing over 100,000 per day since the kick-off off, over a week ago. And both Arabs and Jews are receiving equal treatment by the authorities. From Prime Minister Netanyahu, on down, all elected Israeli officials have lined up for the shots as a motivation for others to follow. Like house cats being fed treats, the neighboring Arab states are learning that friendly relations with the Jewish State has and will have major rewards.
Of course, this past year schlepped many negatives along the calendar pages. The attack of the virus, the rapid growth of the hate filled Antifa and its associate organization Black Lives Matter were headliners and will still be part of our negative near future. Our eyes will be on them, their leaders and their actions.
The election of the Biden/Harris team was the real killer. We did not expect them to be victorious. We did not support them. They will surely carry on, during their four year term, the Jew/Israel negativity that Obama exuded during his terms. We must be prepared for this and finally stand together to fight this abhorrent stance that threatens not only Israel but the entire Middle East. The Arab states, those signing on to the Abraham Accords see it clearly.
May we all pray for peace in the coming year, in this country and around the world. These are perilous times. Rough waters are ahead. May next year be a better one. We cannot say it enough…..our prayers for the coming year are needed. Let’s do it. May G-d bless us, one and all.
