President Donald Trump on Friday cautioned elderly supporters to stay home during the coronavirus pandemic — and vowed to shield America’s senior citizens from COVID-19, Politico reported.
“Stay. If you feel good, if you feel safe — because it’s going to be gone — stay where you are,” Trump said during his speech in Fort Myers, Fla., to hundreds at an indoor event where mask-wearing was sporadic — and not required — and chairs were set apart, but not always by six feet, Politico reported.
“Don’t leave. Don’t say, ‘Oh gee, I have to get out. The president said, let’s get out.’ Stay where you are.”
“I might do that if I weren’t in this position. Maybe I’d be doing it, myself,” he added.
The campaign rally banner was titled: “Protecting America’s Seniors.”
Trump told the crowd he was “working as hard as I can” so older Americans “can kiss and hug your children and grandchildren very soon,” confiding: “That’s something I missed also. I will be honest with you.”
The caution was in stark contrast to speeches at other Trump campaign rallies, where the president regularly urging his supporters to be unafraid and restart their daily lives, Politico reported.
